Amy Mansell Magic Study itself is a great book; it is set in the land of Sitia where magicians are allowed, and are seemingly rather common. Yelana gets to meet her family, who she has absolutely no memories of, for the first time in fourteen years. (That's pretty daunting and you would think the *moment* would be emotional; but it wasn't for me. Sure there were plenty of tears from the characters, but I didn't feel it.) She then travels to the citedel to learn to control her magic. There are, of course, plenty of twists and turns along the way, but you'll have to read the book to find out what they are!

I can't really decide why I don't like Magic Study as much as its predecessor... I think I got used to Ixia and the castle and the people there! I miss the light humor of Ari and Janco and there's definitely not enough of Valek. Speaking of Valek; he's always calling Yelana 'love' which doesn't seem right to me - I would think that an assassin would be one for pet names. There are some cool new characters... and once again some dark themes; including those of rape and murder. The book doesn't really focus on these though, they are merely a reason to 'keep going'.

My overall verdict for Magic Study is 3 and a 1/2 stars out of 5. It is a great book and a must-read if you have already read the first book in the Study Series. by Amy Mansell
