Kaitlyn Wilson The True Blood series is based on Sookie Stackhouse, a small-town bar maid, who is caught up in the world of vampires.

I began reading the True Blood series after finishing the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. To say True Blood had big shoes to fill is an understatement. And as unexpected as it was, True Blood did not fill those shoes. After all the hype surrounding the series, I anticipated a fabulous story, but was sadly a little underwhelmed.

The first two books were okay, but not really something to write home about. I found the tone of the books to be very selfish in nature and many of the characters are very hard to like. The language of the books, written in a southern Amercian twang, also made it a little difficult to follow. I often found myself wondering how and when the scene had changed and felt I was 'missing something' quite often. Despite this, I have developed a fond affection towards Sookie, the poor dear.

The third book was definitely worth the read! After slowly becoming accustomed to the world in which Sookie lives, as well as the style of Harris' writing, I was able to enjoy the plotlines more easily. The introduction of more supernatural creatures gave the story more depth and the addition of Alcide the werewolf made the tone of the book a little sweeter. I had a similar experience with the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. I wasn't particularly fond of the stories until later in the second book, and then I became passionate about it. I have high hopes now that Harris will do this again for me with Sookie's stories.

I am now reading the fourth book (Dead to the World). The mysteries that have developed are well worth the further reading and I am enjoying the current twists in the major theme of Sookie's love life. I can't wait to see what else is in store for Sookie throughout the rest of the series.

After the initial disappointment, I would recommend this series. To give credit where credit is due, I believe that Harris has done a fine job of decribing her take on the vampire world. Which I am sure was no mean feat. I am also certain that I was prejudiced by the hype of the series, and had my expectations not been so high, I may have enjoyed the first two books more.

To any keen reader who likes sex scenes and mild supernatural stories, this series is for you. by Kaitlyn Wilson
