Another Great Adventure in Time
Connie Willis is the mistress of time travel science fiction; from the short story 'Fire Watch' to the drama of 'Doomsday Book' and the joyful romp that was 'To Say Nothing of the Dog,' her mythology and methodology remain consistent and her characters remain consistently engaging. 'Blackout' is the latest offering in this loose knit series and the most ambitious. Willis plays with the rules of her own world, stranding five historians in World War Two era Britain. They, and we, are left wondering what, if anything, they could have done to change history. As I edged nearer to the end of this substantial text I wondered how Willis, masterful story teller that she is, was going to draw it all to a conclusion. The answer? She didn't. We must stay tuned for the sequel, 'All Clear.' by Sarah Langford
