  • REVIEW: "Forsaken" by Jana Oliver5

    Laura Williams In my efforts to make a dent in my TBR piles, I picked up this book only hoping to reduce the pile a little further. I didn't have any great hopes, mostly because I wasn't that keen on the cover. However, the blurb was interesting so I figured I'd give it a shot.

    To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I was,as we say here in Wales, gobsmacked! This book was so astoundingly good that when I finished it I went straight on to the kindle app on my iPhone and purchased the sequel. Then I finished that and had to by part three! I read all three in a day, even though I had to stay up into the wee hours to finish. Two words: worth it!

    Riley Blackthorne is the only female Demon Trapper, so she has a lot to prove. Furthermore, her dad is a legend in the business so she's got some pretty big boots to fill, too. And she rocks. She was strong, funny and determined and I loved her.

    The third person narrative is split between her perspective and that of Beck, Riley's father's demon trapping partner. Beck is a country-boy-made-good who has a streak of arrogant stubbornness to him which hides some deep vulnerabilities. He wants to protect Riley, but tends to express himself in such ways that annoy her. Their banter is at once infuriating and hilarious.

    As the narrative progresses, Riley has to face some grim challenges. I was hit-for-six by the inciting incident of the book and then completely charmed by Riley as she tried to cope with all of the darkness in her life.

    One of the glimmers of light in her world is Simon, a fellow apprentice. Jana Oliver writes their scenes with tender sweetness and I'm sure I was meant to love him, but I just didn't. Maybe it was his piousness which made me feel a bit "meh" about him, (I'm sorry but I can't imagine I'd ever go for a guy who wore a big wooden cross around his neck...), but mostly I think it was Beck. The dual narratives show us how perfect Riley and Beck could be for each other, even when they are busy pissing each other off! This was expertly done.

    Even though I wasn't sold on Simon, he's important to Riley's development as a character and as a young woman. Beck is a bit older than her and has done a lot more living than she has. If they ever hope to be together, Riley has some catching up to do! I'm not talking sex, I'm talking about the trials of love and loss that define the people we become. Riley begins The Demon Trappers series with a tough streak, but she's still soft in a lot of ways because she's so protected. That changes rather quickly!

    Overall, this was a brilliant first instalment to what is turning out to be an awesome series. Check back tomorrow for my review of Forbidden, the second book in the series. by Laura Williams

  • FORSAKEN- Tough characters and creepy demons offer material for a new exciting fantasy series!4

    MissPageTurner Since my favourite book is about fighting demons, I couldn't wait to read this new demon themed novel. I started FORSAKEN three times and never got beyond chapter one. I have no idea why exactly we had such a slow start, because in the end I liked FORSAKEN.

    The story is set in a poor and run-down Atlanta 2018. Money is tight and many people have to make their living by trapping and selling demons. Now is the time for our heroine, Riley, to enter this hellish business. In an all male world she has to proof she's as strong and skilled as her male colleagues. And it was cool to follow her on her way to become a trapper with all its difficulties and deprivations.

    Remarkable about FORSAKEN is the accumulation of male protagonists and possible matches for Riley. There's Simon and Beck, both demon trappers, her best friend Peter and the mysterious Ori. I already have my favourite match, it wasn't difficult to like him. But everything about Riley's feelings is still so undefined that I am curious about the developments in her love life in FORBIDDEN. The story is told from Riley and Beck's point of view and rather slow-paced. Writing and characters aren't extraordinary, but solid.
    This first novel in the THE DEMON TRAPPER series is all about Riley and her way to become a respected member of the demon trapper guild. I liked FORSAKEN but hope for more action and romance in book two.

    Jana Oliver invented an original organisation for the business of demon trapping. Their equipment and various types of demons make FORSAKEN an authentic read. Interesting is that Oliver associated a religious background with the business of demon trapping. Hunters and trappers work together with the Vatican.

    I am already curious in which direction the whole story around demons, the Vatican and an ominous conspiracy is heading!

    THE VERDICT

    I give it 3,5/5 stars.

    With a bit more action and romance in book two this series could easily become one of my favourite demon themed series! by MissPageTurner

  • Amazing Beginning5

    Najla Qamber Forsaken is an amazing beginning to an action-packed urban series.

    It begins in an urban 'men rule all' city where metal is scarce and valuable. Riley is on a job to trap a demon in a college library and everyone crowds around her while she does her job, like seeing a demon around is completely normal. It gives a reader such a different world to view and read about where seeing demons steal shiny things and demons in dirty alleys are usual everyday happenings.

    Things get interesting as Riley learns more about the demons and how to trap them using magic filled spheres despite the Trappers' Guild's protest against her recruitment into the job, Riley fights her way in trying to prove that a girl can trap a demon as much as a guy can.

    As life goes on for Riley, she often mentions how she misses her Mac laptop and other technology which is common for us and not so much for them anymore since the demons started running around stealing shiny stuff and eating people. Imagine living like that.

    As the story continues it never ceases to be action filled and exciting. Especially for our heroine who is tough, smart, and shows she really can take care of herself (most of the time).

    As her world crashes around her, she shows the reader how hard life can be in her world as she fends for herself against the normal high school bullies and trying to find a way to pay her rent and her dead mothers hospital bills.

    To state the obvious, Jana Oliver has one of the best writing a reader would find in the Young Adult Genre. Oliver has in her hands "The Next Big Thing". Though the book wasn't so romantically focused Oliver manages to make up for it by writing such a captivating unique book with action filled scenes and so much more. by Najla Qamber

  • Demon Trappers= ^_^5

    Keisha What I think: At first I found the book kind of hard to really get into. I thought it might be another Twilight wannabe about a good-looking mythical boy and an ordinary girl, but it is so much better than Twilight and about a hundred times better than all those other Twilight wannabes. The great thing about Demon Trappers is that Riley have the whole "I need somebody to save me" attitude, because she is able to watch out for herself. When I was reading the book I also started to fell a little bit depressed for Riley because whenever anything got good for her, something spectacularly bad comes along and ruins it. I guess this is what helps make it such compulsive reading; you want find out if the protagonist comes out better after the hardship. Also just for good measure, the book has some interesting and handsome boy characters to keep you interested, so even a reluctant reader would read this ( and then the reluctant reader would find out how incredibly awesome the book is and would read the book to the very end. Sneaky ;). All in all a very good book with something for everyone and a storyline that will keep you interested and wanting more. by Keisha

    A definite must buy! Has everything you need!4

    Maria Jana Oliver has written this book wonderfully! She has added humour, action, romance, love and loss. You will most definitely love this book if your a fan of wanting to be in a whole other world. As this is what Oliver has created. A world involving demons with a bad attitude (which is hilarious), boys who are unbelieveable (you won't be able to choose which one you like best) and a main character who is easy to relate to.

    Riley, the main character, Oliver created Riley to be an equal, to act like any other teenager. Maybe more mature. Also, at certain parts in the book we learn about Riley's past which is effective in giving us a better understanding of who this character is.

    Such a delight to read! One of the most gripping books i've read. And trust me, i've read a lot! by Maria
