Lovely
My summary of the book - Beatrix agrees to write to Captain Phelan for her friend Prudence who doesn't care but after writing for months Beatrix falls for him and has to stop writing to him because she is deceiving him. Once he returns from the war and finds Prudence he realises that she didn't write the letters but someone else did for her. He sets out to find out who it is and when he finds Beatrix everything falls into place.
Thoughts on the characters - Beatrix is unusual in that she is more comfortable with animals and being outside so she doesn't fit into the mould of the young ladies of the town which makes her finding a husband hard. When she starts writing to Christopher she finds someone that she can relate to but as soon as she realises her feelings she has to stop, which makes things hard when he comes back and decides to go after Prudence. When she meets Christopher she tries to be friendly and not show it was her who wrote the letters but she can see he needs her and she tries to be his friend and help him through his troubles.
Christopher had a tough time in the war and his scars run deeper than his skin and the only thing that helped him through was the letters from Prudence so he is angry when he finds out it wasn't her but someone else. He vows to seek revenge but when he spends time with Beatrix and realises it was her he forgets about revenge. She helps him when he can't stand the attention when everyone wants to celebrate his war hero antics. But his problem is he can't give himself fully to her because of his nightmares of the war and in her usual way she manages to get to him and make him fill alive again.
Overall thoughts - Really good humorous story and I just Beatrix character as she is so different and makes a nice change from all the other female historical characters and she is prefect for the dark angry Christopher. The story is also full of love and passion which I just love in a book.
I have really enjoyed the whole series featuring the Hathaways and they are definitely on my re-read list. by Leanne Lingwood
