Reviews for Perchance to Dream
Marvelous masterpiece!
I'll try to make this review without spoilers but if you haven't read the first book Do Not continue reading, please. And just in case my review of Eyes Like Stars (first book) is HERE.
Bertie & Company is in the outside world, finally released from the Theatre and ready for adventures and answers.
But they have two goals to achieve: First they need to rescue Nate from the The Sea Goddess' grip. And second Bertie needs to find her father and bring him back to her mom, Ophelia, to whom she promised to reunite their family.
And everything seems to go perfect when she rans directly into The Mysterious Stranger who is her dad. And with him she unravels another mistery about her childhood but before she can question him he flies away (yes, he flies away). Gladly for her there's no time to feel sad... a new face joins the Company: Waschbär, some sort of thief of unwanted things which means if you have something you don't want to have he might come very handy to get rid of it.
With him in the Company Bertie hopes to track her dad down using Waschbär keen senses and he proves to be really good, in fact.
Now Bertie's days are filled with Ariel, the air elemental who abandon the Theatre with her because, in his own way, he loves her deeply. And Ariel doesn't hesitate when it comes to let her know how much he loves her... But Bertie's nights are shared with Nate who, somehow, is able to communicate with her despite being held prisoner of the Sea Goddess.
Sadly Nate's time is becoming thin... each day he disappears a little bit more and Bertie is afraid she won't find him in time.
New things are coming her way with the Innamorati, another company like her that creates big performances and now that she is The Misstress of Revels they seek her help to create a story, another masterpiece, to enchant their public.
What they don't know is that Bertie's power are too strong for her to control and what she might create could become more real than they expect.
And lurking in the shadows Sedna's vengeance is reaching them ready to crush them down or ready to make an exchange...
Personal opinion:
No matter how many times I try to think what I want to say for this book is rather difficult without making any spoilers so here goes what I can say:
Read the first book, Eyes Like Stars, and then you will have to read this book. I assure you.
Lisa Mantchev's writing has done the impossible and became better... the twists, the plot itself, the characters... it all feels alive. I found myself reading no stop, smiling, laughing, crying and cheering for Ariel and Nate at the same time. What can I say? I love them both.
The fairies that are always with Bertie will make you laugh out loud and giggle with their craziness and cuteness. Bertie's story will enchant you and you will need to take deep breaths a lot of times.
And I don't want to begin taking about the covers because, believe me, I love them all so much that I'm sure I wont stop praising them. by Alaiel Kreuzunder reviewReviewed by Andrea for TeensReadToo.com
In PERCHANCE TO DREAM, all of the main characters from the first book are back - Bertie, Nate, Ariel, and my favorite, the fairies! But this time their story takes them outside of Thèâtre Illuminata and into the world.
They are on a quest to find Nate, who was taken by the Sea Goddess at the end of the first story. The Company uses Bertie's magic - for she is now the Mistress of Revels, the Teller of Tales, and can write how their story is going to go. But she has to be careful, because what is written can happen in different ways.
Along the way, we meet several more characters, such as the Thief and Bertie's fathers. And while Bertie loves Nate, she is soon finding that she also has feelings for the air elemental, Ariel. But who does she love more? You'll have to read to find out!
This was a neat sequel to Lisa Mantchev's EYES LIKE STARS. I feel like this was slightly more of a love story and I enjoyed that. The book is so creative. The story and setting and action that this story brings into your head are so full of imagination and fun.
My favorite characters from the first book, the fairies, are back! And they are just as funny. I want my own little fairies to come provide comic relief for me!
PERCHANCE TO DREAM sets up the next book in the series nicely, and I can't wait to get to read it! by TeensReadTooA fantastically-written fantasy.
My review for Eyes Like Stars, the precursor to Perchance To Dream, was brief, flighty, and not a true approximation of how I feel about this series. Yes, I said Eyes Like Stars is the novel all young adult authors should aspire to. After reading Perchance To Dream, I feel I should elaborate.
Lisa Mantchev has a very prosaic writing style, infused with quotes and jargon from her wealth of theatre knowledge, all without losing her own personal edge. Dialogue is witty and sharp, and she achieves a wonderful balance: the sense of familiarity with the characters offsets the mysterious world filled with infinite possibilities.
There is another balance kept, too: the comedic moments offset the devastating tragedies. The first chapter alone is a fantastic example of the humorous side of Perchance To Dream, wherein the Fourth Wall is broken through and the fairies prattle on about pie. Meanwhile, you will encounter at least two shocking revelations throughout the novel, and grow even closer to a character you might not have had any sympathies for in the past.
As a genre novel, Perchance To Dream rips apart all conventions. I am not usually a fan of high fantasy - which I suppose the Théâtre Illuminata series is - but Lisa Mantchev bends the rules of genre, creating something breathtakingly original and fantastical, yet still modern. Everything is colourful, brilliant, larger than life, and just a touch hallucinogenic. A Baz Lurhman/Tim Burton lovechild, dark and radiant all at once, whirling at such speed it's hard to keep up.
It is my genuine opinion that the protagonist, Bertie, is one of the most powerful female characters in young adult fiction. She has an inner strength that she comes to realize over the course of Perchance To Dream, continuing her evolution from spunky, dye-hard theatre misfit. She is no weakling, no coward, and does not require the aid of a love interest to save her life every five pages - nor does she require a significant other to make her interesting. She can carry the novel quite well on her own.
After a year without her, it was spectacularly refreshing to meet Bertie again. Reading Perchance To Dream returned to me my faith in young adult novels, and reminded me why I read this genre. Now, if you pardon me, I need to mourn the loss for another year, until book three is published ...
