What am I missing?
I was pretty disappointed. It was slow and long. For me, when a book like this has so much detail--not so much descriptive detail but detail like "and then she did that, and then she did this"--the ending really needs to pull it all together in an unexpected way. I felt that even the end was drawn out for no particular purpose. Some of the concepts in the book are vaguely interesting, but not enough to make the book more exciting. For instance, the politics in China coexisting with a capitalist economy and the idea of sending Chinese peasants to Africa to farm the land there and how that squares with other colonizing/labor exploitation schemes throughout history. But I would love to have a discussion with some of the people that rated the book so highly. What did I miss that impressed others so much about this book? by Lindsey Griffith
