Reviews for Delirium
Review: Delirium
I started reading Delirium because of the TBR intervention weekly Meme and I'm GLAD I picked this book. This book got me hooked from page one. I LOVED the protagonist, though at the beginning she was a bit too goody goody and followed all the rules, but as soon as she met Alex, everything changed. Alex was the one who opened up a switch to her brain, he made her see what life really is about, he showed her how to think of herself, he guided her, ever so gently, to the truth, even if it might hurt him. I loved Alex from the first time he was introduced. He winked! You know I'm always a victim of winks.
Hana was a character that I cautiously liked. At the beginning because she seemed to always have a mind of her own, speak out about things that are even forbidden to think about, and I felt like Hana would cause the problems. I was afraid of their friendship dissolving but in a way you can say that Alex saved that from happening. Towards the end I felt like Hana would be a hindrance to their plans. So you can see why I was very cautious about Hana, but in the end, she was a character you can't but love. Another Character that I loved and wish that maybe a spinoff would end up being created for is Grace. She's six years old and a resistor at heart! Lena loved her so much, and so did I.
The romance between Alex and Lena did not feel rushed, I usually have that problem with books, when the characters suddenly fall madly in love and I'm left thinking "When did THAT happen?" so I liked the pace of their romance, I loved how Alex took care of her, didn't push her, let her think for HERSELF, even though most of the time she was lost and confused, and I loved how no matter what in the end he would do anything for her. That is so heartbreakingly beautiful. Yes I've been infected, I have contracted deliria *gasp*, bring out the shackles and watchdogs and put me in Ward 6 now! (Joke you'll get once you read the book).
People said the ending would be jaw dropping, and that's exactly what happened. I was shocked, immobile, mentally counting the days till pandemonium is out. The book is phenomenal; a book I would recommend for anyone, romance, dystopian, contemporary lovers, it has a bit of everything really. by Juhina & FarahRecommended
This is going to be one of those reviews where I know what I want to say but it's hard to put into words and get across so bear with me.
The idea or the premise of this novel would appeal to anyone. A world where love is seen as a disease that can be cured as soon as we turn eighteen. A world with no pain, no sadness and freedom. Who wouldn't at least want to pick it up.
But! But, it was hard to read. Here's where it gets hard for me to write...
The writing was excellent. It was packed with emotion where there should be emotion, it was nicely paced and it had fabulous description. However, as far as the emotional touches went, they put me off. Normally, a book like this should be emotional right? That's obvious. But if compared to other similar books, the emotional side normally makes me, as a reader, feel emotional. I mean, that's the whole point. Delirium didn't. It actually pained me to read at times.
Aside from that it took a while to get going but as soon as Lena meets Alex things start happening and certain aspects of the lie Lena has been living start to unravel. There are quite a few surprises throughout the book which I liked because they were completely unexpected and fit in well with the story.
Overall, I did like the novel and I'll definitely be reading the sequel. by Maryam H- Top review
Fabulous Book! Must Read!!
Delirium is the first book I have read by Lauren Oliver. I still have yet to read Before I fall, but trust me when I say, It WILL be the next book I buy! As I said in my IMM vlog, I had Delirium on hold for a library e-copy. I am beyond happy that I went ahead and purchased this MAGNIFICENT novel!
For me, Delirium is one of those books that makes me want to shout about it from the rooftops! It is so beautifully written in a way that is just completely captivating. I was just so enamored with this book that it was very hard to put down. I found myself caught up in the emotion that the characters were feeling. I would catch myself actually holding my breath, without even realizing it! Oliver's writing is so very descriptive that it made me feel like I was actually in Portland, Maine watching the scenes unfold right there in front of me. While reading what Lena was going through, I felt the passion, the sadness, the hatred and the joy with her. It was an absolutely remarkable experience.
Lena lives in a world where the government has proclaimed that Love, otherwise known as amor deliria nervosa, is a disease that is "the deadliest of all deadly things." Lena's eighteenth birthday is approaching and then she will be old enough to have the procedure. The procedure that cures the disease. She will no longer be at risk of catching this horrible disease that causes so much pain and sorrow. She didn't want to end up like her mother, who committed suicide when Lena was young because she was infected with amor deliria nervosa.
Not long before her procedure is scheduled to take place, Lena's whole world gets turned upside-down when she meets Alex. She begins to doubt everything she has been taught. She goes from anticipating the "cure" to utterly dreading it. No longer so intent on doing everything that she is told to do.
The characters in this story were great. Lena, who started out the average face in the crowd, growing into someone she never thought she would be. Its such a remarkable transformation to 'see'. Hana, Lena's best friend, was equally as pleasing. The tall, beautiful, rich blonde who everyone stops and stares at. What I love about Hana is that even though she has all these things she could boast about, she is in no way snobby or thinks of herself as better that Lena. Alex, I really don't know how to put this beast of a man into words, but if your interested in finding out about him, Lauren Oliver does it best!
I cannot forget to mention the romance aspect of this novel. This is one hell of a love story! I'm not kidding guys, I was not expecting to fall in love with this story so much! Sometimes reading the romance parts in a novel bothers me. Not because I'm uncomfortable reading it, but because it can be too 'cheesy' or there is not enough romance to fully satisfy me with the story. Delirium was spot on.
Lauren Oliver did a fabulous job! I really just cant say enough about this book. If you have considered reading it, DO IT! You wont regret it :-) by Megan Born Beautiful, romantic, LOVE IT!
Wow, what can I say - I loved, loved, loved this book and I don't want to be cured! by Natalie Ward
RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN.
CHARACTERS:
Magdalena Haloway - Lena is 95 days away from being 'cured'. She will be 18.
Hana - Bff to Lena
Grace 6yrs old and Jenny 9 years old - Lena's cousin's children.
Rachel - Lena's older sister, needs a good slap.
Aunt Carol - Also in need of a good slap.
Alex - Gorgeous male lead with golden brown hair.
I had the best time reading this book. WOW!!! What an awesome, tense, exciting, nail biting read.
What an interesting concept to come up with. Love is a disease,
'amor deliria nervosa'.
Wow!! I am very excited for Lauren Oliver and this book. I highly recommend the read , the first in a trilogy.
Following blurb taken from Lauren's page:
Fox 2000 has optioned the rights to Lauren Oliver's New York Times bestselling young adult debut novel Before I Fall. This is Oliver's second novel to be optioned for film, after her upcoming January 2011 release, Delirium, was picked up in June.
I can so see this book as an exciting movie. Lauren writes with such clarity, visually , so easy to see the scenes. My heart was pounding on several occasions. I can not wait for book # 2 , 'Pandemonium'.
The ending to 'Delirium' , nearly killed me, in a good way. There were several scenes where I was literally holding my breath, reading, waiting ....... hoping. I want to talk about the story , but I just can't. If you feel unsure of the first couple chapters, where it's all going, just keep reading and the book blossoms into this emotional , rollercoaster ride.
Rules....are meant to be broken.
FAVE QUOTES:
"Everyone is asleep. They've been asleep for years. You seemed... awake." Alex is whispering now. He closes his eyes, opens them again.
"I'm tired of sleeping."
For a while we stay there in silence. Alex rubs circles on my shoulders, arms and knees - anywhere he can reach, really, like he's desperate to maintain physical contact with me. I wish I could close my eyes and be blown into dust and nothingness, feel all my thoughts disperse like dandelion fluff drifting off on the wind.
"I love you. Remember. They cannot take it." by Michelle AurichtReview of Delirium
You know that feeling, when you keep reading one book after another, hoping that one day you're going to find exactly the right book for you - the book you'll instantly fall in love with, the book which will stay on your mind many days after you're finished with it?
Well, I can finally say: I just found it.
When I got the opportunity to read Delirium, I tried not to feel overly excited. To be honest, I was kind of expecting to be disappointed with the book. Now I feel ashamed. Because Delirium was AMAZING.
I was nicely surprised with Lena, our main character. She went through so many changes during the book, from self/conscious "ugly ducking" who was living comfortably in her own bubble of ignorance and naivety, afraid to breath and afraid to live, to confident young woman with her own vision of the future, her own dreams and more importantly - her own mind.
Yes, this book is mostly about love. About love between mother and daughter, between two best friends and (of course) between boy and girl. But I can assure those of you who are looking for the thrilling action, that you won't be disappointed either. This book is going to give you some serious heart attacks along with some of our favorite "WHAT?!" and "NO, YOU DIDN'T" moments. Excited yet? I bet you are!
You can also say goodbye to our classical "best friend element" which usualy consist of underdeveloped female character whose one and only mission in the book is to talk to our heroine, so she won't have to talk to herself all the time. I have to say that I cared for Hana, Lena's best friend, almost as much as I cared for Lena herself and I'm curious what's going to happen to her in the next instalment.
Finally, what everybody is waiting for - Lena and Alex's love story. Yes, the LOVE STORY. There is just no other way how to describe their passionate, forbidden relationship which people will speak about over the next couple of generations. I liked Alex from the very beginning but what he did at the end of the book left me speechless and definitely sealed the deal: I'm in love with yet another fictional character. (Like there are not enough of them already).
Now the question of the day: Do you think a book can be great even without a love triangle?
I can tell that as far as I'm concerned, it can. Lauren Oliver proved to me that the book doesn't need any complicated love triangles to be interesting and worth reading.
I would give Delirium more than 5 stars if it was possible. But it isn't so you have to settle for the 5 most shining stars I'd ever given. I can't wait for the sequel and I'm definitely buying my own copy of Delirium as soon as it's out.
Happy reading! by Judita PáleníkováReview from Blkosiner's Book Blog
A world without love. Where there is a cure when you turn 18 and before then strict rules and regulations to keep boys and girls apart. Delirium takes us into that world. The main character, Lena, is intriguing, giving us her thoughts in a fresh and genuine voice. She is easy to relate to- just rebellious enough, just cautious enough. Until she falls in love.
Alex is shrouded in mystery from the moment he appears in the story, and it is fascinating to learn more about him. And oh, their first kiss. It is written beautifully, and leaves me longing to have that for myself. Lena's journey shows clearly our longing for love, to be in love, is powerful. Even when she thinks being in love will kill her, she doesn't care. Sigh. Delirium also shows the intensity of grief. As Lena remembers her Mom, it almost breaks my heart. Not only her grief, but what her mother felt.
While the story is not incomplete per say, I just want so much more! The place it ended left me itching for the story to continue even though there is closure of the main plot lines.
I was intrigued the whole way through, Delirium is well paced and it is a well thought out novel. I have recently started liking the dystopians, and Oliver has written a unique and compelling universe. by Brandi KosinerReviewed by Andrea for TeensReadToo.com
In the world that Lena has grown up in, love is a disease. It's called "deliria," and when people turn eighteen, they undergo a procedure called the "cure." This ensures that no one is infected by the disease.
Lena has grown up counting down the days until she can be safe and cured. But the summer before her eighteenth birthday, the unthinkable happens - she falls in love! Caught between knowing that following her head and the rules of her community by getting cured will ensure a safe future, and following her heart, Lena struggles with deciding what is right and what is wrong.
Back when I read BEFORE I FALL by Lauren Oliver, everyone was raving about it. And while I liked it, I didn't think it was as great as everyone was claiming. So when I read about DELIRIUM, I didn't get my hopes up. But boy, was I surprised! This book was so much better than BEFORE I FALL!
Right off the bat, I was engrossed in the story. A world without love? I can't even imagine having to live and not being able to feel things. I really can't fathom it. I am a very emotional person, so the idea of being "cured" of the "disease" is astonishing to me! But the way the community was described made it feel so real. Very scary! ( I loved the quotes that were at the beginning of each chapter - they were from "real" books talking about the disease.)
I quickly grew to love Lena. She tried so hard to be good and follow the rules, yet she knew something was wrong and she followed her *gasp* heart. And I loved Alex, too! What a sweet guy!
There are several surprises in this story. I have to say that I personally didn't like the ending, but that doesn't stop it from being an amazing story. The ending is good and it fits; it's just not what I thought was going to happen. It's been awhile since I have felt that strongly about a book and thought about it so much afterwards. So far, this is my favorite book of the year (both 2010 & 2011)!
