The Moomins are coming! Tove Jansson's cuddly Finnish trolls have experienced a surge of popularity lately, popping up in textiles, ceramics and toy shops around the world. But best of all, they have been appearing in new books.

blog imageThe Moomin chapter books were first published between 1946 and 1970 -- originally in Jansson's native Swedish, with English editions appearing soon afterwards. Comet in Moominland is often seen as the first Moomin book, introducing the world to Moomintroll and his friends Snufkin and the Snork Maiden. But really another Moomin story came first: Tove Jansson wrote Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen (The Moomins and the Great Flood) in 1945, but it was never published in English outside Scandinavia -- until now!

The wonderful people at Sort Of Books have been digging up Moomin picture book gems over the last few years, starting with The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My, then Who Will Comfort Toffle? and finally The Dangerous Journey in 2010. And they've now brought the world an English translation of The Moomins and the Great Flood, in a beautiful hardback edition complete with original line drawings and sepia tints.

blog imageThe Great Flood is a forerunner to the 8-book Moomin series, telling the tale of Moomintroll and Moominmamma venturing across strange lands in search of Moominpappa, taken to sea by the marauding Hattifatteners. It shares the same fantastical tone as Finn Family Moomintroll, with the Moomins discovering chocolate trees and marzipan pebbles, bespectacled storks and water serpents... and ultimately a very happy ending in Moominvalley.

Many of the ideas here are fleshed out in the later books; Sniff's love of jewels, the floating theatre adventures of Moominsummer Madness, and the childhood exploits of Moominpappa. It gives a lovely insight into the development of the Tove Jansson's ideas and artwork, and will be loved by any fan of the Moomins.

With thanks to Sort Of Books, we are offering one lucky winner a Moomins box of goodies including:

    - The Moomins and the Great Flood

    - The Book About Moomin, Mymble and Little My

    - The Dangerous Journey

    - Who Will Comfort Toffle?

    - a lovely Moomins mug from Arabia ceramics

A runner-up will receive all three hardback Moomin picture books.

Just answer the simple question below by Thursday 13 December, midnight GMT to be in with a chance to win.

    Update -- winner: Thomas Claes

    Runner-up: Melissa Jane Turner

As a child every time I read Tove Jansen's Moomin stories I entered a magical world where Finnish forests towered over me and who knew what creature I might encounter. Fortunately, I fell in love with a man who loves to read me the stories and the magic is still there! Wonderful....

Wonderful memories of these books from my childhood, which made an impression as the most "grown-up" ones I had read at the time. Revisiting them in later life you find so many depths to them that you realise they are not really childish books at all but a great insight into the Finnish psyche.

Very nice! I translated the book to English for my brother-in-law perhaps 10 years ago after it was first translated to Finnish. I'm a lucky one as my parents have read Moomin books for me and my sister and brother already in 60's and 70's; we are Finns. :-)

I have fond memories of these. They are the earliest books I remember borrowing from the school library as a nine year old and reading independently. (Particularly I remember Comet in Moominland.) The only one I now have is Moominpappa at sea (not listed above). I fiercely reject any comparisons between my mother and The Groke although my daughters may have had Little My hairstyles occasionally.
