DescriptionDuring the second half of the Qing dynasty in China (1644-1911) a merchant built a new home for his family in the mountain village that had been home to his ancestors for more than 20 generations. He named the handsome two-storey structure Yin Yu Tang, which would house his descendants for the next seven generations ? through some of the most tumultuous periods in Chinese history. By the mid-1990s, the surviving members had moved away and the house was abandoned. In 1997, the house was moved to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and will be opened as a permanent installation in 2003. This work tells the story of 18th-century Chinese domestic life, culture and the restoration of the house at the Peabody Essex Museum.
