Eva doesn't want to get out of bed anymore and eventually she stays there for a year. Even going to the toilet seems to be a strain. The question is why. Eva's husband, Brian, is a selfish man and her children are even worse. Her mother and mother in law seem to find Eva a burden mostly. Only the hired handyman and artist Alexander seems to be nice to her. Then Eva becomes a bit of a celebrity and things start to go downhill from there.
The lack of warmth and kindness was the thing that surprised me most about this book. How unfriendly people can be to one another. Maybe it's exaggerated here, but that doesn't mean it isn't real. I liked Sue Townsend's sarcasm and brutal honesty. The story was funny, but also crude and somehow very true. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading it as the theme could have been boring, but it wasn't, not at all. It was one bizarre thing after another and the end was wonderfully appropriate.
