Product description

Everywhere hailed as a novel of rare beauty and power, White Oleander tells the unforgettable story of Ingrid, a brilliant poet imprisoned for murder, and her daughter, Astrid, whose odyssey through a series of Los Angeles foster homes-each its own universe, with its own laws, its own dangers, its own hard lessons to be learned-becomes a redeeming and surprising journey of self-discovery.

My sisters and I all read this book at the times we were similar ages to Astrid, the protagonist.

While she goes through a harrowing loss of innocence that I wouldn't wish on anyone, her voice resonates with anybody who has ever felt the loneliness and strangeness that can come with being a teenager, realizing that the world isn't quite as rosy as it seemed when you were a child. I think about this book often and it really was one of those important books that I will never forget.
