By Andrew Ritchie 20 Apr 2011 5

This is a well written book in terms of style and substance, an excellent insight into the leadership style of one of the most successful sports coaches of all time.
Vince Lombardi is best known outside the USA for his (often taken out of context) quote "Winning isn't everything it's the only thing". In this book the author shows that despite a clear desire to win epitomised by the rule "Chase perfection, settle for excellence along the way", his approach was far from win at all costs.
The style of the book is based around a framework of principles required for strong leadership and the detailed actions that enable the execution of strategies that uphold those principles.
Vince Lombardi's insistence on personal responsibility and being accountable to oneself backup his deep rooted personal integrity which is the rock on which all his other principles are built. "You don't do what is right once in a while but all the time" stands out for me.
Fans of Stephen Covey will recognise many of the underlying principles of the seven habits and should enjoy this book, though the framework is very different.
Keep it simple, focus on the tasks you can be best at, practice, practice, practice and execute with integrity are not new or unique philosophies but this book brings together ways in which they have all been proven roads to success.

Highly recommended.

Review quote

"Winning is not a something thing, it is an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit, unfortunately so is losing...."---Vince Lombardi, June 22, 1970
