Today everyone knows Mickey Mouse as the cheerful ambassador of all things Disney. But back in the 1930s, Mickey gained fame as a rough-and-tumble, two-fisted epic hero - an adventurous scrapper matching wits with mobsters, kidnappers and even city slickers. And Mickey's greatest feats of derring-do took place in his daily comic strip.

There is really nothing much to say about the first two-volume set of Fantagraphics' 'Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse" except that it's simply awesome.
Being a fan of the old school comics I simply couldn't wait to get my hands on the first decent collection of Gottfredson's comics in English and these books simply exceeded my wildest expectations.
The comics are simply wonderful - the stories are still beautiful, intelligent, funny, interesting and really, really enjoyable. As it's the case with all true art, the time has taken nothing away from Gottfredson's work, but only added to its charm.
Each book also includes valuable extras such as expert essays, interviews, covers of various Mickey Mouse editions from all over the world etc.
In case you want to dig deeper and grasp cultural and historical contexts (in some cases this is required to truly appreciate and understand certain aspects of the comics) don't look any further - it's all in there.
This is a wonderful collector's item, well printed and bound and wrapped in a sturdy slipcase, but it is far more than that - it is a wonderful read more than anything else.
Being more than satisfied with the first set, I am determined to buy the entire collection and can't wait to get my hands on every forthcoming volume (the second set, including volumes 3 and 4 is on its way and the first set with Sunday colour strips is set for release sometime in November).
Buy these for yourself, your kids, your grandkids, this stuff is timeless!
Floyd Gottfredson s wily take on the character is revered by the best cartoonists, and Fantagraphics has packaged these earliest serial strips from the 30s in some truly handsome volumes. Take advantage of the two volume slipcover edition for a great value and the publisher s now signature excellence in presentation. --Paul Montgomery
