DescriptionThis is the extraordinary love story of Clare and Henry who met when Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry suffers from a rare condition where his genetic clock periodically resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. In the face of this force they can neither prevent nor control, Henry and Clare's struggle to lead normal lives is both intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

  • Wonderful book5

Amanda Gilder One of my favourite books of all time. A lovely story of love and loss. It stays with you even long after you have finished.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get wrapped up into a compelling story. by Amanda Gilder

  • Beautiful5

Rebecca Woodward I loved this book. I finished it in one day and the moment I finished, I wanted to read it again. It always makes me smile and cry. One of the best books I have read. The rich, expressive writing and the warm, interesting characters bring life to an interesting story. I fell in love with the characters. The book and movie have many differences, but each are lovely. I am glad I read the book first. Don't expect them to me the same, they are only similar. An enchanting story by Rebecca Woodward

  • Fabulous!!!5

Lauren Davis I also saw the movie before reading the book and I think that helped grasp the story a little easier. I absolutely LOVED the book. The characters, storyline, the unique way of writing... It is definitely a must read if you enjoy reading about love and relationships. The ending is terribly sad (tear jerking) but a little price to pay for a beautiful story. by Lauren Davis

    Brilliant5

Lauren I saw the movie before I read the book, and I did not enjoy the movie at all so was very hesitant to even read this book. A friend of mine insisted that I read the book and after a few chapters, I was hooked and wanted to find out more about Henry and Clare. Definitely a must read for fans of a good love story. by Lauren

  • Before. After. Always.5

Martina I was skeptical, I have to admit it: I was afraid to read a corny book that had sold too many copies not to be suspicious, but curiosity got the better and here I am: I read it and liked it, although at first I tried to convince myself I didn't care about the story of Henry and Clare...

Henry and Clare are a wonderful couple: the perfect intersection of bodies and souls; their history plays us along: it seems it wants to teach us that love can overcome the boundaries of time, but the reality is that time is more cruel than you can imagine: knowing the future won't be useful to change it!
The only consolation lays in the hope of reliving the joys of the past: the chance to enjoy once again a segment of the existence they had to leave behind apparently forever is a sad revenge: the fall of the "Einmal ist Keinmal" by Kundera.
    It hurts.
Better to follow the "classic" straight line, rather than being trapped in a twisted spiral in which it's impossible to distinguish a direction to follow.
Would you like to travel in time?
After reading this book I don't know what to say.
    Perhaps I would say no.
    It's painful.
Exhaustion, loss, cold and thousands of other variables are hidden in a time travel: it could be fatal to me, why risk it?
The strength of Henry and Clare's love reveals itself throughout the difficulties it has to overcome: the obstacles that stand out "before" and "after" their life, casting a shadow of relief or sadness over the present.
Would it be better not to know?
    I don't know.
I just know that I was moved.
This story has torn me: It took and crumpled me, leaving its mark.

The structure of the novel is clear and well designed - there is nothing to fear, the jumps in time would not confuse the careful reader - and the writing of Niffenegger glides lightly without weighing, outlining the figures of two lovers out of time: Henry and Clare as Ulysses and Penelope forever. by Martina

  • Fascinating.4

Roger Manley As well as being very well written, entirely enjoyable and a compelling read this story is fascinating and entirely plausible - even you know as you read it the very premise of the book is impossible!

The book has been described as merely being a new way of writing an old love story. This is nonsense because even though there is a compelling love story (which is well written) it is about the effect on the charachters of one man's curse of involuntary time travel.

The author must have worked very hard to maintain the plot with accuracy and she succeeds very well. Her very disjointed, time shift narrative captures the disruptive, even dangerous episodes of time travel.

    Highly recommended by Roger Manley

  • I'm loving it!5

Montse Sayol This book is really engaging and entertaining. by Montse Sayol

  • I loved it5

Claire Mason This book was a wonderful combination of genres - a clever sci-fi combined with an emotionally moving love story without being overly sentimental. It took me a little while to adjust to the constantly changing timeframes, but it wasn't long before I was caught up in the story, which although sad at times, never depressed me.

I recommend the book enormously and just wish there were more like it.
