DescriptionTime is a resource. Everyone knows it has to be managed. And on the Discworld that is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like the underwater - how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities, where there's never enough time. But the construction of the world's first truly accurate clock starts a race against, well, time for Lu Tze and his apprentice Lobsang Ludd. Because it will stop time. And that will only be the start of everyone's problems. THIEF OF TIME comes complete with a full supporting cast of heroes, villains, yetis, martial artists and Ronnie, the fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse (who left before they became famous).

    Author Information
Terry Pratchett is the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series, the first of which, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983. Raising Steam is his fortieth Discworld novel. His books have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he is the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal, as well as being awarded a knighthood for services to literature. After falling out with his keyboard he now talks to his computer. Occasionally, these days, it answers back. www.terrypratchett.co.uk @terryandrob
    Review quote
"'Terry Pratchett is one of the great inventors of secondary - or imaginative or alternative - worlds. He is not derivative. He is too strong...He has the real energy of the primary storyteller'" -- A. S. Byatt The Times "'In a better world he would be acclaimed as a great writer rather than a merely successful one...This is the best Pratchett I've read...Ought to be a strong contender for The Booker Prize'" -- Charles Spencer Sunday Telegraph "'Reads with all the polished fluency and sure-footed pacing that have become Pratchett's hallmarks over the years'" -- Peter Ingham The Times On Saturday
    Review text
This is the 26th Discworld novel, but Pratchett's legendary inventiveness is still strongly in evidence, and he manages to pull a whole slew of new ideas out of the hat. It is the job of the Monks of History on Discworld to manage the resource that is time. Time is stored and pumped from places where it's wasted to places like cities, where there's never enough of it. But when the construction of the world's first truly accurate clock begins, problems for the denizens of Discworld include nothing less than the end of time. Familiar characters include Death's charismatic granddaughter Susan, and we're introduced to obsessed clockmaker Lu-Tze and simple-minded apprentice Lobsang - not to mention Ronnie, the fifth horseman of the Apocalpyse (he left before they got famous). As ever, there are gags, puns and digressions enough to satisfy the most hardened Pratchett fans, and the cleverness of the storyline gives the lie to those who claim the master of comic fantasy is running out of steam.
