Reviews for The Slap
Annoying
I agree with Natalie - I didn't like any of the characters. For a book that made it to the best sellers, it left me disappointed.
I really dislike how a book feels the need to include overtly sexual passages when it does nothing to add to the storyline - just because it's a book for adults. The characters include paedophiles, rapists, cheaters and alcoholics, but nothing is done to them to make any feel any kind of remorse. I wanted justice for the innocents of the novel and never got it!
And "the slap"? Merely used as a way to link the characters. I was waiting for a heated debate between characters that involved more than scowls and characters thinking to themselves that the others are liars. I wanted to see the court scene in full, to feel repercussions across the families - and yet all the reader gets is brief mentions of it between people *********** and cheating on each other.
The writer has skill - the use of different characters for each chapter was good - but the content left me angry that these immature characters are thought of as "suburban Australian people" and the lack of resolution left me pissed off. by Miss Maryunder reviewThe Slap
A great topic for the times - Enjoyed the subject matter, the characters, the plot and reading so many viewpoints from eight different characters about what has proven to be a very contentious topic: To smack or not to smack.
It is a rewarding read! by Leonie Lewthwaiteunder reviewDisappointing
I did not enjoy this book very much. I thought it was boring: I could not warm to the characters, the plot was not interesting and the exchanges between the characters superficial. I wonder why it was so highly ranked in the bestsellers list. by Natalie Negre
