Feisty redhead Cassie arrives penniless, at the ranch she believes her father left her, to start a new life. Instead she finds implacable Jed Hazard occupying her ranch awaiting a shipment of beef on the hoof to start his dream ranch.
From their initial wariness and dislike, they declare an uneasy truce. Jed rescues Cassie from having to return in shame to Boston to wed the man of her uncle's choosing, by marrying her himself. They call it a marriage of convenience, but the platonic ideal they envisioned becomes more and more difficult to maintain, in the light of their growing attraction to each other.
But Jed carries a secret that could destroy their idyllic love forever. As an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, Jed was unjustly accused of dereliction of duty and murder and he has been on the run ever since. He has no way to prove his innocence of the charges laid by a vindictive superior officer, so when he's arrested, he tells Cassie to go back to Boston, as he fears he will be hanged.
Jed underestimates Cassie's love and determination not to lose her man. She does everything in her power to see that justice is served.
Tame the Wild Wind shows the grit and determination the early pioneers of New Mexico had to bear, as well as the hardships and despair they underwent to settle the wild west. Hard physical labor and all sorts of natural dangers such as snakes, Indians, weather all combined to show us how glad we should be that these hardy people worked so diligently to make this country what it is today.
While the HEA ending is easy to predict, how it finally occurs is an interesting study in human kindness and determination to `do the right thing.'
I liked the story; it was a treat to gain insight into the law of the old west.
