Reviews for Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Great Book.
The style is dated, but the book is nevertheless full of information on the life of the first great genius of the bass guitar; James Jamerson. The music technique section and CDs are a little dissapointing, as they feature transcriptions of the efforts of the many famous bass players who contributed, rather than from original Jamerson recordings:- having said that, there is still a lot to be learnt from them!
If you are a serious bass player and want to have an understanding of the roots of this very recent instrument, this book is a must have. Dr. Licks' writing style is sometimes annoying and dated, but the wealth of information makes up for this. If you buy this book you should also watch the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" documentary....which is truly brilliant! by Andrew Lambert
