DescriptionAt the end of July 1588, Philip II's Armada of 130 ships set sail against England. Within a month they were condemned to defeat. The authors spent 13 years reassessing the profusion of untapped documents, diaries and private papers lying forgotten in Spanish and Dutch archives. This material has been augmented by underwater discoveries from the Armada wrecks.

    Review text
It is refreshing to come across a book which can be confidently pronounced to be the best in its field. This is one such. It combines the archival skills of one of our finest historians with the particular talents of an underwater archaeologist to provide the most compelling short account we have of the events of 1588. Few know the diplomatic documents from the reign of Spain's Philip II better than Parker, and Martin has examined the wrecked galleons which lie off the Scottish and Irish coasts. The result is an exciting narrative of the launching of the Armada and some interesting new ideas as to why it failed. (Kirkus UK)
