In the six months that followed his leaving teaching and the Philadelphia area, Matthew floated down the Peruvian Amazon and formed 'The Bardbarians' (a two-man literary circle), backpacked around Southern Africa, hiked to the bottom of a snowy Grand Canyon, soul-searched, and finally began writing full-time. He has since returned to the Philadelphia area, where he lives with his wife and greyhound.

The Silver Linings Playbook has been at the top of my to be read list ever since I found out that it was being made into a movie. Its nearly a year on from the movie and I have finally read this book. My god it was fabulous! I didn't think I'd love it half as much as I did and believe me when I say I love this book immensely.
Other than the occasional chick lit this is probably one of the only adult books I've ever read. And to be honest with you it wasn't that bad. I'm always put off by the adult section in a bookshop as I worry that they won't grab my attention in the same way that YA does. I mean the covers are quite boring and the synopses aren't very convincing. I was wrong about this book though. It had me wrapped around its little finger as soon as I opened the book.
I'm sure you all know what this book is about by now (especially since I posted the synopsis above). So I won't go into detail about what it's about as that could take forever. Considering it's such a short book there's quite a lot to take in but I think that's just down to the nature of the plotline. A lot of this book focuses around American Football, which I was slightly wary of at first but found as I was reading it helps you understand the characters and connect with them on a more personal level.
Let's talk about the characters shall we? Pats narrative voice was incredibly entertaining. I loved how he was straightforward and didn't hold back on what he was saying. This made him unintentionally humorous and it helped brighten up scenes which could seem quite awkward. I was surprised at how little Tiffany was in the book considering she was a big character in the film; I guess that's just the movie world though. Nonetheless she was still an excellent addition to the plot as like Pat she is suffering and I felt her story was very engaging. She also gets straight to the point when Pat needs to be put in his place.
I'm so glad that I decided to start the year off with such a brilliant book. It has nestled its way into my heart without even trying and now I don't want it to leave. Matthew Quicks writing is so endearing it's almost impossible to dislike a character he has written about. This book is grade A fabulous and everyone should give it a go! Even if you don't like it (which I doubt will happen) there's always a movie to fall back on.
