Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

This has got to be one of the best books i have ever read.
It's just so well written. Each of the characters is so well thought out. You can't help but sympathize with Jack and realize he is not some monster but someone who really struggles with his demons but just can't win sometimes. The fact that Stephen King himself was struggling with his own alcoholism at the time conveys a deeply personal feeling to the book and this particular character.
Wendy and her constant worry not to become her mother at the back of her mind, being torn between standing by her husband and defending her son. And little Danny... You really believe you are reading a 5 year old's thoughts.
This book is a masterpiece and i thoroughly advise you to read it. And stay far, far away from Kubrick's 'adaptation' to the movies. That piece of film should have never been allowed to hold the book's title. Don't watch it. Don't let it ruin this wonderful experience.

Sah good. Much love. Wow.
But seriously, amazing! Mind-melting horror at it's best! It's a high possibility that most people have read/seen the shining by now, or at least watched the Simpsons episode dedicated to it. This novel is really scary and fun to read... If you like the poop scared out of you! So fun and engaging, do buy.
"A master storyteller." --"Los Angeles Times" "Scary! . . . Serves up horrors at a brisk, unflagging pace." --"The New York Times" "This chilling novel will haunt you, and make your blood run cold and your heart race with fear." --"Nashville Banner" "Guaranteed to frighten you into fits. . . . with a climax that is literally explosive." --"Cosmopolitan" "The most wonderfully gruesome man on the planet." --"USA Today" " " "An undisputed master of suspense and terror." --"The Washington Post" " " "[King] probably knows more about scary goings-on in confined, isolated places than anybody since Edgar Allan Poe." --"Entertainment Weekly" " " "He's the author who can always make the improbable so scary you'll feel compelled to check the locks on the front door." --"The Boston Globe" " " "Peerless imagination." --"The Observer" (London)
