Editorial reviews

An unusual location and occupation for American readers, this is a recall of crafting days by a young woman who went with her aunt to Sutherland in Northern Scotland and lived there from the time she was ten to seventeen. Her uns??ing conversational style is mostly on the subject of the pets of the pair of animal lovers. Most appealing was Lora, the Common Seal, whose musicianship took over a "ceilidh" and whose companionship was endearing. There was also a range from a destructive roebuck, wild cats, the necessary goats, to the rat Rodney who once terrified some sleeping guests. Human kind are precious too - the postman whom Lora sided, the redoubtable Mr. Fraser who had second sight...But there are barah words for the dirty tinker who treated his woman so hard in an itinerant life, and sad lapses even with the animals, as a dog is found to be a sheep killer. An unobtrusively appealing book for animal lovers. (Kirkus Reviews)
