DescriptionCalled "The Black Pope" by many of his followers, Anton La Vey began the road to High Priesthood of the Church of Satan when he was only 16 years old and an organ player in a carnival: "On Saturday night I would see men lusting after halfnaked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing the organ for tent-show evangelists at the other end of the carnival lot, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday night they'd be back at The carnival or some other place of indulgence. "I knew then that the Christian Church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man's carnal nature will out!" From that time early in his life his path was clear. Finally, on the last night of April, 1966-Walpurgisnacht, the most important festival of the believers in witchcraft-LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of Ancient executioners and announced the formation of The Church Of Satan. He had seen the need for a church that would recapture man's body and his carnal desires as objects of celebration. "Since worship of fleshly things produces pleasure," he said, "there would then be a temple of glorious indulgence ..."

Reviews for The Satanic Bible
- Top review
I bought this book purely out of curiosity, having read a few extracts on the net, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
Contrary to the popular opinion, Anton LaVey has presented a very solid, sensible philosophy. He doesn't try to justify his beliefs in any way, or mask them - he explains his principles well and he has covered pretty much all the important topics. Though it may seem radical to some, The Satanic Bible exposes an allegedly hidden, "forbidden" aspect of human nature and it has a way of making us question ourselves and others alike.
After quoting LaVey a few times, I have gotten responses such as "He actually has a point there", even from my more conservative friends. What he has written is not difficult to understand, as long as you keep an open mind about it. Lastly, his language and writing style are superb. by Vanja
A book within it's covers
I had to think long and hard before I began this review.
Not because of it's content, but rather how I was going to frame and deliver this review.
The most definite recommendation I can offer is that if you are reading this for the first time, be sure to read this page to page from the very beginning. The pages found prior to The Book Of Satan provide a philosophical context of the book that is essential to its meaning as well as a prologue, or history (if you should so prefer) to those who have contributed to or are mentioned in it's composition.
