Reviews for Quantum

  • A good perspective4

Rui Antunes This book focus on the basic concepts of Quantum Physics with a fresh and personal insight. It does not try to convince you that Quantum Physics make sense - on the contrary: it describes in detail how Quantum Theory is so far from common sense - and how it explains all observations made on the subatomic world. It also presents the different physical interpretations of Quantum calculus. With excellent diagrams and pictures, it is a light book on a very heavy subject.

There are a few shortcomings on this book, though:
    - sometimes the pictures and boxes (with texts from other authors) break the sequence of the book; it would be better if at least the boxes were shown only in the end of the chapter, to minimize this (for the pictures this is harder to achieve)
    - you are left with the sensation that there was much more that the author could have said about some subjects; it could have had a few more 'advanced' or 'detailed' chapters

Still, overall, a very nice book for someone who wants to understand the basic concepts of Quantum Physics and its interpretations. by Rui Antunes

  • Fascinating and informative3

a Book Depository customer "If only I'd had a science teacher who had half Jim Al-Khalili's enthusiasm; who knows what I might be doing now! Actually I learned more from this one book than I did in any number of droning school science lessons. It's written in an interesting and engaging way, so much so that the reader can't help but become fired with the same enthusiasm. For me, this was a real page-turner of a book and it made me think in new ways about the whole fascinating subject of quantum mechanics. In fact, I would often find myself sitting thinking about what he had just said in a chapter, or studying a diagram and taking notes - taking notes! Me! And on three separate occasions I reached a conclusion about something, scribbled down a little diagram, then was delighted to have it confirmed for me half a dozen pages later - now that is great teaching is it not.
The one tiny bugbear for me, as someone else has pointed out, was the sudden appearance of an explanation of a completely different experiment/subject, right in the middle of reading about something else. This did throw me a few times as I couldn't resist reading this new explanation, then had to re-read what I'd been reading before, so I didn't lose my thread.
But that was a minor irritation, and won't make me drop the stars from a very well deserved five. Highly recommended." by a Book Depository customer
