Princess Kai-lan is a rebus book (where mini pictures replace some of the words) and is a great way for 2-5 year olds to learn that all those squiggles (words) actually mean something. The reader points to the words as they are read and the non-reader supplies the picture as it occurs. Eventually the non-reader can supply simple other words such as a, I, the, and.

Other than names there are few mandarin words in this book, but it is still great for the very young

Princess Kai-lan deals with issues of friendship, prejudice and fueds at the level of very young children.

Like other books in the Kai-lan series (and as my children pointed out to me), these are are a mandarin version of Dora The Explorer.
