John MacCormick is a leading researcher and teacher of computer science. He has a PhD in computer vision from the University of Oxford, has worked in the research labs of Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft, and is currently a professor of computer science at Dickinson College.

Although I studied computer science (which I suppose fuelled my interest in this book in the first place), the author's straightforward explanations and real-world metaphors for the algorithms discussed are very accessible. Don't be put off by the word "algorithm" either - basically if you want to know how search engines work, or how using your credit card number to buy a book from the Book Depository is secure - this makes for a fascinating read. Highly recommended.
