If only this book was available a few decades back!
I've always had an interest in the night sky, but trying to find constellations, understand sky charts has always put me off a determined effort to understand what is going on around our planet.
This book has taught me more about astronomy in a one-hour skim through than I've managed to pick up from numerous struggles to grasp the basics - I may even buy a telescope next year (I'm taking Dickinson's advice - use binoculars at first). Plus I've ordered a remote for my camera (the astrophotograhy chapter is very welcome) with a digital camera - they pick up more than out eyes can apparently.
A superb book, with easy to follow explanations, diagrams, explanatory sidebars & incredible photos.
An unreserved '5' from this beginner ( with his follow-up book ordered)
[Review-of-previous-edition: ] [Nightwatch was] a clear, concise manual for backyard stargazing that also managed to convey the excitement of astronomy. This fantastically revised edition continues that tradition, but now includes sky maps for observers in the southern hemisphere and a guide to celestial phenomena up to 2018. The best introduction around.--Ivan Semeniuk`New Scientist` (01/20/2007)
