    After hearing such great things about this book, I bought it last Christmas with a gift card my husband got me, and I finally got to read it. I've been dying to read it for a long time, but there just isn't enough time in the day to get through my tbr list!

    I know a lot of books don't live up to their hype, but boy this one was one. It lived up to the hype and went way over it. I know some people may be getting tired of werewolves (I love werewolves!), but this is a unique take on it. Werewolves and witches. It's amazing!

    What makes a great book a lot of time when I'm reading, is the characters. But this one was definitely the plot. I mean, the characters were AWESOME! But the plot? The plot was unique and intriguing and just kept throwing new and exciting things at you.

    Sometimes I would think, "Oh, this is going to happen next.", but it didn't! I was left with my mouth hanging open and my eyes on overdrive trying to take in everything on the page so I could flip to the next one.

    I've been looking for another book that has a strong female character. A kick-ass, strong female character. (i.e. Rose from Vampire Academy.) And I haven't really found many lately, but Calla? Calla is DEFINITELY kick ass. She cared about her pack, she put her pack in front of her own happiness. I'm not going to get into that because it would giveaway some of the story, but you'll understand once you pick this book up.

    Yes, there is a love triangle in this book. But I really can't figure out which guy I want Calla to be with. They both have their qualities and both sound smokin' hot. Sometimes I like Shay more, and sometimes it's Ren.

    Hopefully the next book (Which I'm currently reading! Yay! That's how great Nightshade is, I read ONE book after this book before I took on Wolfsbane.) will help me figure out which side I'm on.

    Overall, pick it up. Do it. If you haven't read it already, please get a move on it. It's not your typical werewolf book. And the writing is amazing. It keeps you reading and keeps you interested and wanting more. Andrea Cremer is definitely on my author watch list now.

    The cover is gorgeous. I can't figure out if I like this versions cover, or the new paperback cover better. I'm really mad, though, because once I buy Wolfsbane for my shelf, my covers aren't going to match. Anyone know where I can get a new book cover to put on my hardback? I've seen them around the blog-o-sphere. by Amanda

    SpadesHigh I utterly enjoyed this book. I could not put it down. I even had sleepless nights saying "This is my last chapter then I'll go to sleep," and 3 chapters later I'm still repeating the same mantra. Nightshade has the right pace, it is curiosity inducing, love triangle instigating, steam romance of a novel. Though it is a young adult book, there are romance scenes exaggerated enough for the strong imaginative reader. Nightshade had me feeling like I was watching the whole story play out right in front of me. I am definitely reading the up and coming follow-up of Nightshade - 'Wolfsbane'.
    Even though I have dark circles under my eyes, Thank you Andrea for an Awesome book and for those restless nights. by SpadesHigh

  • Highly Recommended-This is a great Paranormal story!5

    Raychelle Smith Andrea Cremer's Nightshade is by far one of my favorite books! It has so many elements that capture my interest. The characters are so real and the story is relatable. Readers will feel like they are a part of this world and are sure to find themselves sharing emotions with the characters. Calla Tor, the Nightshade Alpha, is such a strong character. She has always known that she will mate with Renier Laroche, and she has never questioned her destiny until a chance encounter that leaves her world changed forever. Renier Laroche, the Bane Alpha, is the perfect mate for Calla. He is a natural leader and commands the attention of everyone, including the human girls. Ren is naturally possessive of Calla, knowing that they are to be united soon. Shay is...well, what can I say about Shay? He is everything that readers hope for in a love interest. There are no words to adequately describe him, but I shall try. Shay is the light in Calla's dark. He is not afraid of Calla and does not back down from a challenge. He is funny, passionate, strong, and curious. Throughout the story, one learns a lot about Shay and I started to root for him as the story progressed. It is hard to choose between the two love interests because their personalities are practically opposites and Calla finds herself attracted to each in different ways. The young Banes and Nightshades are equally impressive. Each is unique and strong and brings another element into the story.

    Andrea Cremer's writing style is amazing. Each word is crucial in creating her world and she does so with such grace. This writing and the story has such a natural flow that I was immediately caught up in it. The plot something very different from other books (at least those that I have read and searched). As the story progresses and one learns more about the reality of the Keepers, the Guardians, and the Searchers, he or she will find that some secrets are more dangerous than others. The cliffhanger definitely left me craving more. It was kind of as if my world just stopped at that moment and couldn't pick up again until I had Wolfsbane. That is how great this story is. If you were debating on purchasing this book, I recommend that you do so. And fast! Wolfsbane will be released in July '11, so there is still sometime to fall in love with this book and Andrea's writing, as I have, before the second book is out. by Raychelle Smith

    Maria Guajardo (GABY) First of all, I want to warn you. Maybe after you read this review you'll want to kill me. Or send me to therapy. Just saying.

    Nightshade is one of the most popular books of this year. With this amazing cover and blurb, who wouldn't want it to read?. So, when it was finally released, I bought a copy. Werewolves are one of my favorite paranormals themes, so I was really happy to read this book.

    Calla is an alpha female. She's destined to mate with Ren, the alpha male. At first, she's very strong, and I loved her character because she was independent. She wasn't that kind of dumb girl who can/won't take care of herself and knows her limits. She was totally sure about her future, until she met Shay.

    And now she's confused. Her heart and her mind aren't working at the same page. She likes this guy, but she can't be with him.

    And as the story begins to unfold, Calla turned to be vulnerable. It was interesting, but annoying. She made some decisions that I wasn't totally sure about it.

    The Ren - Calla - Shay trio didn't fulfill me. I always fall in love with the alpha males, so yes, I like Ren (some people said I needed therapy ;P). He wasn't the good guy. He maybe isn't the right guy for Calla, but he did like her. Even more than like her. And he is sooo intense.

    Instead, Shay was just kind of dull. I felt as if the author took more time creating Ren than him, so when he appeared, I just didn't understand why Calla was so crazy in love. Their relationship was instant, and between him and Ren, he didn't seem the best choice, specially at the ending.

    But, it's interesting to see a different relationship, in which the paranormal character is a girl and the human is a boy. I was waiting for an author who was brave enough to change things.

    The good thing? The plot, wow!. Andrea Cremer did a great job making werewolves interesting again!! She created a world were werewolves may not be the stronger, and where the characters have to open their eyes and understand their reality in which they have been living.

    Also, the ending definitely was s-h-o-c-k-i-n-g. Why, WHY, did it have to end that way? *huge cliff hanger*

    Overall, I was expecting more but I enjoyed it very much. I'll read the sequel, Wolfsbane, because really, I want to know what is going to happen to Calla! by Maria Guajardo (GABY)

    Finally A Book That Lives Up To The Hype5

    Rebs R Lots of hype and web media surrounded this book's original release. Some reviewers even received actually calla lilies as part of the promo. Although I think that's a little much, the book entirely lived up to it.
    Well written, well thought out. Characters we're well rounded, and Calla herself went through changes and actually grew throughout the book. I can say that this is one of the best YA werewolf books I have read in a long time. I cannot wait to read the next in the series!

    Lydia Presley The good:

    - Calla is a strong-willed, intelligent female.

    - Lots of action, lots of interesting lore.

    - Fantastic setting - Vail, Colorado is exactly where I could imagine a wolf pack taking up residence.

    The bad:

    - I'm tired of love triangles. They keep popping up and it hurts my brain.

    - I hate cliffhangers - thankfully this is something that will be solved in July of 2011.

    Now that I've finished listing out some of my favorites and not-so-favorites, I'll talk about my impressions of Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. As mentioned above, I'm so over love triangles and this one really didn't work for me - mostly because I liked Ren a lot more than I liked Shay. I don't like the amount of conflict breaking rules does to a story because I end up spending the whole time waiting for the rule-breakers to get caught instead of focusing on the actual plot that's being developed. Don't get me wrong, I like a rule broken here or there, but these were some pretty amazing breaks happening and it just seemed a bit unrealistic that the all-powerful Keepers were kept in the dark for so long.

    I loved Calla and Bryn and even Sabine. I thought the presence of strong females really gave the book a nice edge and it was enjoyable not to have a girl swooning over a guy every second page of a book. I loved that there was an actual plot outside of the romance, something that's not as common as you would think these days. And, in spite of hating love triangles, I do like that there is still a chance that Calla might choose either or instead of a full-on leaning toward one (although, I will get highly annoyed if she pulls a "Bella" in book two and just leads one on).

    I was a little worried when I started Nightshade that I was setting myself up for more disappointment in the werewolf YA literature area.. but I was pleasantly surprised and easily made my way through the book in a single days worth of reading. It was fun, engrossing and I'll be on the lookout for book two. by Lydia Presley

    TeensReadToo Calla is the leader of the Nighshades, one of the two wolf packs in town. Her destiny has always been to mate with Ren, the leader of the Bane pack, and she has always been preparing for mating.

    Ren has always been the carefree one. Though an obvious alpha leader, he bends the rules and doesn't take them so seriously. Calla and Ren have never been close, but knowing the date of their wedding is approaching, they both try and make an effort to get to know one another. They start hanging out after school and realize they have more than just a destiny together or an instant attraction.

    Then on a routine patrol on Nightshade territory, Calla saves Shay, the new boy in town, from a bear attack. Calla doesn't know why she broke the rules for him, but she wants to forget it ever happened. Shay isn't ready to let her go; he soon pushes his way in and becomes a big part of her life. He makes her feel things she's never felt before, like she can become someone other than who she is being forced to be.

    Now, Calla has her hands full. Does she stay with Ren and learn to love him? Does she risk the loss of her pack and everything she's ever known for Shay? And just who is Shay, and where did he come from?

    NIGHTSHADE is great from the start and instantly pulls you in. I refused to put it down, each chapter more compelling than the next. This is book one of the series, and I for one am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next! by TeensReadToo

  • Amazing World and Thrilling Love5

    Reading Angel Nightshade was such an amazing engaging read! I flew through this book at the speed of light because I couldn't stand to wait to find out what was going to happen next. This book was action-packed from beginning to end! One great thing about this book is that it doesn't waste a lot of time with the world-building. A lot of paranormal books take a long time to build up to the story because of the details, Andrea Cremer built a fabulous paranormal word for us without once every taking away from the story.

    I'm not normally all about the romance in a book, but this one is just too good not to talk about. I'm a big fan of the love triangle, even though at times it can be overdone. Anytime I've ever read a book/series with a triangle I always have a clear choice of who's side I'm on. There are times that I like both choices, but there is still one I like more than the other. Not this time! Ren and Shay are both so amazing. They both push different buttons for me and do it so well! If I could just forge them together somehow they might make the perfect male! All of the characters in this book were amazing. Each member of the pack had such rich personalities that they just popped of the page!

    Overall, this was an amazing read that I recommend to any YA or paranormal fan out there. This was such a breath of fresh air after reading some stale paranormal reads lately. I cannot wait for the next installment in the series to see what happens with Calla and the packs! by Reading Angel
