Editorial reviews

Pathfinding sans instruments, in desert sands, open seas or in uncharted frozen reaches of the Arctic, is the subject of peripatetic author Gatty's latest book. With heightened technology, he asserts, civilized man relies less on his eyes, ears, sense of smell and powers of observation. The woodsman, yachtsman, hunter, aviator and camper may garner sharper perception and new techniques for survival and direction taking, in chapters which give diagrammed instructions on estimating distances, telling time, and finding water through knowledge and observation of the sun, the stars, patterns of waves and swells and other phenomena of Nature. There is a variety of information here. Why do people who are lost often wander in a circle? Because each person has one dominant eye. (There are instructions to help the reader determine which eye dominates.) Usually wanderers veer consistently in the direction of the dominant eye. Trappers, woodsmen and servicemen should enjoy this pathfinding round-up by the author of The Raft Book. (Kirkus Reviews)
