    DescriptionA mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children", an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here - one of whom was his own grandfather - were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow - impossible though it seems - they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

    Jessica When I started this book I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. The cover is creepy, the pictures inside are creepy, but the book itself is not creepy. Nevertheless, I liked it and I preordered the second one because I like where the story is heading. Recommended to anyone who doesn't judge books by their covers (or the pictures inside.) by Jessica

  • Loved everything about this book!5

    Daina This book includes everything that I love in fiction! I got more and more excited as I realised the direction the story was taking me, and would highly recommend to anyone. It's not a scary read at all, which I enjoyed all the more.

    The story unravels itself at a comfortable (if not page gripping) pace to expose a vast and detail back plot, and I'm eager to get the next book to read more about it.

    Jacob is a great protagonist who starts out as your typical (although rich) boy, in a dull monotonous life in America, and gets thrown into an adventure story where he has to make adult decisions as he fights "bad guys". It was very easy to put myself in his shoes and see through his eyes, and I thoroughly enjoyed how the author let Jacob do what he wanted, even if that got him into seemingly unsolvable fixes.

    Aspects that I love include (only mild spoilers);

    Boarding school/orphanage
    Mystery/Intrigue/Puzzle in the plot
    Childhood Independence and Adventure
    Small island off the coast of the UK
    Old photos scattered through the book to highlight and emphasise, rather than used as a crutch
    Elaborate and plausible explanation and back story
    Time Travel
    "Magic" in the form of human "powers" - meant to be genetic mutation

    I would highly recommend! For ages 10-110 - I am 23. by Daina

    Maddy Garrett The cover and summary are very enticing but overall the writing and storyline was poor, the characters were hard to relate to, and the plot line went nowhere. It was, however, very original. Still would not recommend. by Maddy Garrett
