"I can see how this book could be helpful to people who suffer from depression. From the explanations of the condition, through the introduction to mindfulness, to the meditation exercises, it's very easy to read and the CD is great for getting started on your own.
But it didn't work for me. The discussion on depression was so broad that generalisations far exceeded specifics. From the first time that mindfulness
was mentioned, the word that repeatedly came into my mind was 'distraction'. I couldn't stop thinking that this is all just a way to distract the mind
from brooding ('ruminating' is the word used here). Think of your breath, think of sounds, think of raisins, in fact think of anything at all - if it
distracts your mind and stops you thinking those negative, depressing thoughts, then it's a success.
Perhaps you'll find something here if you're not expecting too much. I found Jon Kabat-Zinn's earlier book 'Wherever you go There you are' to be much better. Or try 'Miracle of Mindfulness' by Thich Nhat Hahn."
