DescriptionIf you've ever struggled with depression, take heart. Mindfulness, a simple yet powerful way of paying attention to your most difficult emotions and life experiences, can help you break the cycle of chronic unhappiness once and for all. In The Mindful Way through Depression, four uniquely qualified experts explain why our usual attempts to "think" our way out of a bad mood or just "snap out of it" lead us deeper into the downward spiral. Through insightful lessons drawn from both Eastern meditative traditions and cognitive therapy, they demonstrate how to sidestep the mental habits that lead to despair, including rumination and self-blame, so you can face life's challenges with greater resilience. Jon Kabat-Zinn gently and encouragingly narrates the accompanying CD of guided meditations, making this a complete package for anyone seeking to regain a sense of hope and well-being. See also the authors' Mindful Way Workbook, which provides step-by-step guidance for building your mindfulness practice in 8 weeks. Plus, mental health professionals, see also the authors' bestselling therapy guide: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, Second Edition. Not great3

a Book Depository customer "I can see how this book could be helpful to people who suffer from depression. From the explanations of the condition, through the introduction to mindfulness, to the meditation exercises, it's very easy to read and the CD is great for getting started on your own.
But it didn't work for me. The discussion on depression was so broad that generalisations far exceeded specifics. From the first time that mindfulness
was mentioned, the word that repeatedly came into my mind was 'distraction'. I couldn't stop thinking that this is all just a way to distract the mind
from brooding ('ruminating' is the word used here). Think of your breath, think of sounds, think of raisins, in fact think of anything at all - if it
distracts your mind and stops you thinking those negative, depressing thoughts, then it's a success.
Perhaps you'll find something here if you're not expecting too much. I found Jon Kabat-Zinn's earlier book 'Wherever you go There you are' to be much better. Or try 'Miracle of Mindfulness' by Thich Nhat Hahn." by a Book Depository customer
