Maddie is in Los Angeles, trying to stay out of trouble. But one night, a seemingly small act of defiance lands her in the place she fears the most: a detention centre. Once again, Katie Kacvinsky paints a disturbing picture of our increasingly technology-based society.

  • As utterly captivating and lyrical as its predecessor5

Annoushka Rand Middle Ground is as utterly captivating and lyrical as its predecessor. The Awaken series is probably one of the most unique dystopia’s I have read in a while. Since the initial hype of The Hunger Games and Divergent I've felt that a lot of authors have tried to gain success by writing something similar. Let me tell you now, this series is a refreshing read and a major eye opener. I found myself on the edge of my seat throughout this book and I couldn't help but want more! It was a fast paced, entertaining read that I highly recommend to anyone that’s looking for something new.

I was impressed with this book which is unusual for a sequel. It had everything I was looking for and more, there was some freedom fighting awesomeness, heart-warming romance (It wasn't mushy in typical YA style!) and copious amounts of sarcasm. No doubt about it Kacvinskys writing has improved greatly since the previous novel. But that just means that it went from incredible to epic!

The character development was outstanding; especially with the character of Maddie. Although she manages gets herself into some sticky situations I find her bravery inspiring. Though, I do think that she needs to think before she acts once in a while. Along with the original cast we are introduced to an array of newcomers in this book, they all had an interesting role to play and I think they each added a bit more depth to the plot. I particularly liked Gabe.

When I first read Awaken my main thought was “Wow, what a thought provoking book” and this instalment only fuelled that thought further. It got me thinking about how much I rely on technology in my everyday life and that’s a lot! But do I really need all of this stuff to keep myself going? Who knows! by Annoushka Rand
