DescriptionA dark, breathless, beautifully-written gothic thriller of murder, madness and a mysterious island...London, 1894. Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself-working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumours about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns her father is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations were true. Juliet is accompanied by the doctor's handsome young assistant and an enigmatic castaway, who both attract Juliet for very different reasons. They travel to the island only to discover the depths of her father's madness: he has created animals that have been vivisected to resemble, speak, and behave as humans. Worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape the island, even though her horror is mixed with her own scientific curiosity. As the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius-and madness-in her own blood.

Moodyno1 Favourite Quote: "Paranoia had crept into that part of my brain usually reserved for reason."

I did not enjoy this book at all. Throughout it I was just so bored and couldn't wait for it to end. However I do think the author is good at writing horror scenes, those where the only parts I enjoyed and the reason I'm giving this book a 2 star instead of a 1 star.

My main problem was the characters, the main character Juliet is probably one of my worst hated ever. All she went on about was the love traingle she was is instead of what was actually happening. Then she was jumping from one boy to the other constantly, I felt like shouting at her to just MAKE UP YOUR MIND! As for other characters, Edward was boring I don't even why he's in the book to be honest plus he had a serious case of insta-love and then there's Montgomery who was okay though he isn't the nicest person ever. The doctor was a great villian but he wasn't in the book as often as I would have liked.

As for the plot it was okay but it was dragged out and none of the supposed twists shocked me, and though the author writes good horror scenes for me she couldn't write good action scenes, too anit-climatic.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this book to people I know personally but I'd recommend it to people on goodreads who like sci-fi or horror because this might be for you. As for me I will not be continuing this series. by Moodyno1
