Review quote

"A love story that is both persuasive and tender" The Sunday Times "An extraordinary book ... as inevitable as Hardy at his most doom-laden. And as unforgettable" Guardian "A description of the extraordinary, sustaining power of a marriage to bind two people together in love, through the most emotionally harrowing circumstances" Daily Mail "It is not only the plot that it so compelling ... What makes this wonderful novel stand out is the cast of emotionally fragile characters, all of whom inspire tremendous sympathy in the reader" Daily Express "A moving tale ... prepare to weep" New York Times "Irresistible ... seductive ... a high concept plot that keeps you riveted from the first page" Oprah Magazine "A spectacularly sure storyteller ... Reading The Light Between Oceans is a total-immersion experience, extraordinarily moving." Critics are buzzing about The Light Between Oceans, the gripping debut from M L Stedman" Grazia Magazine "The characters are beautifully drawn ... A completely unique read. ****" Heat Magazine "A moving tale. Customer reviews

The author said in an interview that this book began with the idea of a baby washing ashore an island, and is about the consequences of the decisions of the couple that find this baby. It was rather clear that the story evolved backwards from that place, since she took so many liberties in getting the plot there. It was extremely unrealistic, which distracted me from trying to enjoy the story itself. I also found the characters to be completely unsympathetic, especially Isabelle, so by the middle of the story I no longer cared what happened to the kid - I just wanted the story to be over. If you're into chick-lit then it might be up your alley, but let this review be a big light-house warning that there are rocks more

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed reading a book this much. I felt myself drawn to it every spare moment I had - and moments that were not spare. At one stage I was so troubled I didn't want to read on, yet at the same time I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen next. I found myself asking the same questions the characters asked themselves throughout the book, especially Isabel and Hannah. The story is mesmerising and the writing itself is beautiful. Stedman's descriptions of the characters, their emotions and their physical surrounds made me feel as though I was with them. Stedman is an extremely talented writer and I can't wait for her next more

Wow! A page turner till the end. Just loved it! Since purchasing this book to read I have noticed that not only has it won many awards, but also been picked up by Stephen Spielberg to make into a movie. But definitely a must to read before then. Set in Western Australia, the "baby in a boat" mystery deepens and it is certainly a rocky journey to the end. Such dilemmas. Will stay with you long after...what would you have done????show more
