"Extraordinary and heartrending." (Markus Zusak, author of The Book Thief). A boat washes up on the shore of a remote lighthouse keeper's island. It holds a dead man - and a crying baby. The author said in an interview that this book began with the idea of a baby washing ashore an island, and is about the consequences of the decisions of the couple that find this baby. It was rather clear that the story evolved backwards from that place, since she took so many liberties in getting the plot there. It was extremely unrealistic, which distracted me from trying to enjoy the story itself. I also found the characters to be completely unsympathetic, especially Isabelle, so by the middle of the story I no longer cared what happened to the kid - I just wanted the story to be over. If you're into chick-lit then it might be up your alley, but let this review be a big light-house warning that there are rocks ahead...

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed reading a book this much. I felt myself drawn to it every spare moment I had - and moments that were not spare. At one stage I was so troubled I didn't want to read on, yet at the same time I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen next. I found myself asking the same questions the characters asked themselves throughout the book, especially Isabel and Hannah. The story is mesmerising and the writing itself is beautiful. Stedman's descriptions of the characters, their emotions and their physical surrounds made me feel as though I was with them. Stedman is an extremely talented writer and I can't wait for her next book.

Wow! A page turner till the end. Just loved it! Since purchasing this book to read I have noticed that not only has it won many awards, but also been picked up by Stephen Spielberg to make into a movie. But definitely a must to read before then. Set in Western Australia, the "baby in a boat" mystery deepens and it is certainly a rocky journey to the end. Such dilemmas. Will stay with you long after...what would you have done????
