Many of the characters are well-known: Valjean, the criminal trying to escape his reputation; Javert, the police agent trailing him; the unfortunate Fantine and her daughter, Cosette; the rascally Thenardier; and, above all the splendid street urchin, Gavroche. Among the unforgettable descriptions are those of the Paris sewers, the battle of Waterloo and the fighting at the barricades during the July Revolution. There are few more complete, or more vivid, pictures of France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. `Les Miserables` is at once a thrilling narrative and a social document embracing a wider field than any other novel of its time.

Having recently seen les miserables the film in the cinema, i wanted to own the original book.
Having spent about 3 hours of my life watching amanda seyfried, anne hathaway and the rest singing their way through their miserable lives i came out rejuvinated!
I wasnt aware this book was the abridged version having not read the reviews.
But I dont mind really, the story comes across as powerfully as you would expect it to, the only upside is it wont take you all year to read it!

I was unaware, at the time of purchase, that this is an abridged version. I will be returning this volume and resume my search for an affordable full translation.
I selected 3 stars because it's.. Well, in the middle.
