Reviews for The Lake

  • Good character driven story4

Sarah Merchant Chihiro is slowly dealing with her grief following the death of her mother by moving to Tokyo and concentrating on her art. She begins a friendship with the man whose window faces hers. He is also dealing with some heavy emotional pain, and together they slowly start to heal each other.

This is a very good example of a character driven story. The story is all about Chihiro and her pain, Nakajima and his pain, and their growing relationship together. Told from Chihiro's viewpoint, the reader is exposed to all her thoughts, feelings and self-doubts. She is definitely a hurt woman who is trying to find a way to happiness, without really believing it's possible.

The whole story seemed to have a dreamy, misty quality. It may have to do with Chihiro's outlook on life, but I found it very fitting. The story seemed to simply float along. It wasn't a light or heavy read, but was instead a unique look at a budding relationship between two damaged people. by Sarah Merchant

    An wonderful piece of fiction5

Nicola Markus This was a truly wonderful book. I've read a lot of paranormal lately and this was the perfect book to return me to literary fiction.

The book is deceptively simple but has a real hidden depth that you only notice as you reach the end and reflect on what has come before. The prose is gorgeous and flowing and it really draws you in and helps you connect to the characters and their lives.

This is one of the most interesting pieces I've read in a while, with thoughts on themes and ideas such as love and the way we deal with past trauma. It was thought-provoking and yet highly enjoyable at the same time. There are darker moments, but I think overall it is a very heartfelt piece of writing.

Highly recommended to fans to contemporary literary fiction. I shall definitely be seeking out more of this author's works.

I received this book as a free ebook ARC from NetGalley. by Nicola Markus
