Richard Cavendish and Pip Leahy's handsome Kings & Queens: The Concise Guide does, as they say, exactly what it says on the tin. A lovely, boxy hardback (150 X 114mm), with over 200 colour illustrations, Cavendish and Leahy's guide takes us from the rulers in pre-Roman times ("the seeds of British kingship were sown long before the Romans or the Anglo-Saxons arrived on England's east coast ... The Celts had carved out their own numerous kingdoms, and they lived in organized, pagan societies ruled by a tribal king") all the way to the present day Windsors.
Over the course of the journey we learn about the Saxons, the Vikings, Alfred the Great (who ruled 871-899), Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), David II of Scotland (Scotland is well served by Cavendish and Leahy's tome) and all the rest of the merry band of monarchs who've ruled these shores. There are certainly more scholarly accounts on the market -- David Starkey's Monarchy: England and Her Rulers from the Tudors to the Windsors comes immediately to mind -- but if you are happy to ignore the tales of the great unwashed lorded over by this rum lot of aristocrats then this is an excellent guide to British history and its roll call of rulers.
