Thereafter the bulk of the book is devoted to the colour palettes themselves - each made up of a collection of between 3 and 8 colour swatches and featuring an inspirational photograph demonstrating its possible use. Every palette is also introduced by a short piece of text describing its influences, potential and variety. Whether your choice is period or modern, rustic or urban, the text and photographs will show how the colours can be used in a variety of ways. Kevin McCloud is one of England's foremost authorities on domestic decoration and is the creator/presenter of the internationally acclaimed Grand Designs, which features real case studies of people designing and building or making major alterations to their homes. Channelling his ambitions to entertain and make the built environment better, Kevin has written numerous titles on decorating; from his first, Kevin McCloud's Decorating Book, first published in 1989 and still in print today, to Choosing Colours, also published by Quadrille, which is already in 11 languages. Kevin's passion for all aspects of the building process shines through in his feisty columns, frequently seen in The Sunday Times and monthly in Grand Designs Magazine, in which he champions issues such as context, the historic environment and sustainable construction. Drawing upon his design roots, Kevin has also created two distinctive paint ranges for Fired Earth that can be found throughout the UK in major branches of B&Q and Homebase, and is currently working on a range of bathroom accessories for John Lewis.

If you're wondering if this book is for you, check out the eponymous Kevin McCloud colour range at Fired Earth. If, like me, you find them muted to the point of dull, then, like me, you won't find this book very inspiring. Having recently moved house, and put off the inevitable redecorating for as long as possible , I was in need of some inspiration .
Kevin's book is not only incredibly simple to follow, but it is packed with some elementary tips that you could easily overlook in your eagerness to get the job done.
By combining the use of colour on walls with associated fixtures and furninshings, this book really helps you to get an overall feel for what your room will end up looking like.
In all, this is a really useful book for both the jobbing DIY'er as well as the serious interior designer , very much recommended.
