Reviews for Japan by Rail
Useful but uninspiring
This is a reference book, not something you can read which'll inspire you. You have to concentrate and refer a lot to the index. It's biggest mistake is to not include a map of the whole of the Shinkansen and JR networks since the entire book is based around them. There are small diagrams in each of the area but for planning purposes, these larger maps would be incredibly useful. They could easily be accommodated in a fold out page at the back and are essential in this type of book.
In saying this it gives suggestions of what to do and side trips in each of the destinations it lists. The hotels it suggests is an obscure list are fairly conservative. For instance the ANA Crowne Plaza Hiroshima is a newish and extremely highly rated hotel built well before the book is printed, and can't be beaten for price, size of rooms, and convenience - within a 5 minute walk of the Peace Park and boat transport directly to Miyajima.
The book is useful and a lot of work has gone into it. It didn't hit the spot for me. by Possum
