Editorial reviews

Ancient Egypt lives again as the Ptolemies rule over a dynasty of blood, luxury and incest. In this initial book of the Ptolemies quartet, Duncan Sprott introduces his readers to the first three Kings of the dynasty. There is the clever, enigmatic Ptolemy Soter, the decadent Ptolemy Philapelphus, and the egocentric Ptolemy Euergets with his desire for empire-building. We are also introduced to the ibis-headed Egyptian god Thoth, who narrates the story. The tale is one of high drama and passion that at times makes the Borgia dynasty of Rome look tame in comparison. The lack of dialogue comes as a surprise in a story of this length, but this is no ordinary novel. Thoth relates the tale in a scriptural way although he comes across as the most human of gods - and sometimes amusing with it. An excellent read with an exotic background of ancient times by the Nile. (Kirkus UK)
