Product description

During the fifth century BC, a small and quarrelsome band of Greek city-states united to repel a mighty Persian army. While the story of this heroic drama forms the main theme of Herodotus' narrative, the author's curiosity fleshes out the text with digressions, folk tales and stories.

Editorial reviews

The great Greek historian documents the dramatic 5th century BC war between a small, quarrelsome but united band of Greek states against the mighty Persian army. While this is his main theme, rivalling his claim to fame as the 'father of history' is his reputation as the 'father of lies', as some call him. For Herodotus also takes pleasure in digressions into stories and folk tales with his accounts of gold-digging ants the size of large foxes or sheep with tails so long the shepherd makes little trolleys for them to prevent sores. An enduring classic. (Kirkus UK)
