DescriptionHeart of Darkness is a chilling tale of horror which, as the author intended, is capable of many interpretations. Set in the Congo during the period of rapid colonial expansion in the 19th century, the story deals with the highly disturbing effects of economic, social and political exploitation of European and African societies and the cataclysmic behaviour this induced in some individuals. A very influential story, it provided the plot of the film Apocalpyse Now.

  • Ironic or Racist?5

Don Dealga A seminal work of the modernist Western literary canon.
The never ending debate about whether Heart of Darkness has a dark racist heart continues giving the book a continuing import, relevance and resonance.
As a document it captures the savage and fanatic vision that drove Western Imperialist projects in 19th Century Africa. As literature it continues to provoke questions. by Don Dealga
