Reviews for Hanging by a Thread
A bit dreary
Clare and her mom have just moved back to her hometown of Winston having left it six years previous. But while she's been gone, the town has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. On the previous two Independence weekends, there have been incidences involving children. The first year, a little boy was murdered, the following year, a girl went missing on the same day. There's talk of a serial killer. Tourism has suffered. Now all the adults are worrying about the kids this holiday weekend and trying to organise events that will keep them all together.
Clare has a special gift that has passed down through her family. The curse began with the murder of her descendent Alma, who was shot in her dress shop by a jealous husband, along with the bride to be. Alma was pregnant at the time and the baby was delivered before she died. Clare can see the memories of clothes she touches, what happened to the wearer while they had it on, and how they felt at the time. Clare's hobby is creating new styles of clothing from old clothes that she picks up at flea markets, garage sales etc. Can you see where this is going? It was fairly predictable.
Clare comes across a badly destroyed denim jacket which happened to belong to the dead girl, Amanda. Clare can't let go and feels like the jacket wants her to help so she speaks with Jack, Amanda's boyfriend at the time, and Amanda's mother. Clare's best friend is acting weird, and Clare discovers that she's been keeping secrets from her about Amanda, she gets suspicious of Rachel's involvement in the girls death.
This was kind of suspenseful but there was a definite anti-climax when the truth was revealed. I had expected something a bit more sinister and so, was disappointed. There's a smidgeon of romance and even though I liked Jack, it just didn't light any fires in me. There would have been no difference to the book if the romance hadn't been there. Romance for the sake of a romance.
Overall, not one of my most enjoyable reads, but something did keep me turning those pages. If you're a fan of paranormal mysteries and thrillers, then you may enjoy this more than I did. by Suzanne FinneganThis YA book that has it all!
Hanging by a Thread is a YA book that has it all! It is a romance with mystery and a bit of a paranormal twist thrown in as well.
Clare has an inherited a special ability. When she touches clothing she can see bits of what the person had done while wearing it. So when she touches a jacket that belongs to a girl who disappeared, Clare cannot stop herself in finding out what happened to her. Along the way she finds that her best friend has been keeping secrets from her and the boy she likes may also be involved in the disappearance of the missing girl.
I have not read the first two of the Banished series but I am happy to say that it didn't matter. I was never lost or left wondering why things were happening the way they were. Hanging by a Thread is a perfect stand alone story. by Dani Chapmanyaaawn

After her parents were divorced, sixteen-year-old Clare Knight, a.k.a. Cee Cee, and her mother decided to return to the city they both grew up in. To the city where her very eccentric grandmother lives. To the house everybody believes to be haunted. And they move there close to the date when, for two years straight, there have been murders. First, a little boy, Dylan, was killed in a car accident. And a year later, a very popular teen, Amanda, disappeared without a trace. The culprit was never caught for either crime.
Claire creates new clothes from people's 'trash'. She's the ace of sewing and just loves her art. But her mother wants her to study and have a real future, one that does not involve art school. But it's her dream, and she's been saving any money she makes from her line, 'NewToYou' to pay for it. But there's one thing that sometimes give her beloved daily handling of clothes a bit of a bitter taste. Clothes speak to her. Just like they did to her grandmother. And her mother before her. But not all clothes and not all the time, only those wore by people during times of strong emotion. Such as fear. They bring her the vision of the moment lived by the owner of the clothes.
And Claire has just found the jacket Amanda, the second victim, was wearing minutes before being murdered. Now she just needs to fit all the pieces of the puzzle and find the murderer... before he finds her.
This book could've been much better. I have to admit I skipped quite a few paragraphs about sewing techniques and such, because, well... it was just boring to me. But I thought it was interesting to see how much it mattered to Claire, even with her 'ability' bothering her. I couldn't quite believe how fast she and Jack got so chummy, because in one sentence she's telling us how he terrifies her and how she can't trust him, and in the other she's all 'oh, I want his body, I need him to hold me'. I mean, really? Are you afraid or are you *****? Just decide already! >. by Karla Vollkopf
