Reviews for Halflings
Enjoyable
Yet another angel-themed book to face my scrutiny, and I am happy to report that Halflings makes the cut and earns my stamp of approval. There are a few hiccups and unanswered questions, but overall I found the story captivating enough to want to keep reading and finally have enough curiosity to pounce on the sequel. It also helps that these Halfling boys oozed with such hotness and tough-but-vulnerable personalities that I would do anything to spend more time with them. What can I say? I cannot resist a well-crafted male specimen who has hope to be redeemed from the Dark Side. Halflings has the same action-packing suspense as Angelfire and an interesting angel re-invention like Angel Burn, and I am totally looking forward to seeing how Nikki and company fare in GUARDIAN. by theEPICrat
Riveting paranormal romance
First of all, Nikki was a girl with two sides. She was a fighter: strong, persistent and wise. But she was also an artist: sensitive, perceptive and emotional. I liked Nikki but there were times when her reactions just confused me. There were scenes in which she acted out of character - as if two parts of her were in battle. But so far, she wasn't the lovey dovey type. She fought against her selfishness, her desire to be with Mace and her weakness throughout the story. She remained rational, weighing her options and considering the possible consequences of every action. I liked this about her.
The love triangle reminded me a bit of Elena-Stefan-Damon from The Vampire Diaries TV series, but instead of vampires, we get Halflings - Nephilim guys. Mace was the sweet, good guy. He was Nikki's knight in shining armor. He was the type of guy that made girls melt with his warmth, his touch and his charm. He fell for Nikki the first time he saw her. Raven was the dangerous and irresistible badboy. He was handsome, like any Halfling, and he knew it. He used it to his advantage. But underneath the layer of cold calm, rule-breaking and unending tempting, he was vulnerable and suffering. This was probably one of the best forbidden love triangles ever. It really meant life or death, or in this case, eternal punishment without redemption. It was beyond tragic. The two brothers were in danger not just of falling in love with a human but also of falling over the edge. Nikki was torn between sacrificing her feelings and causing serious trouble for the two brothers. I really enjoyed reading about the push-pull drama of this. Sparks flew and hearts ran marathons.
The idea of Nikki having three gorgeous guardian angels was intriguing. First off, why three? Her case must be really serious for heaven to send three Halflings to protect her from vicious hell hounds and demons. The progress of the enemy's attack as they strived to claim Nikki was good. I could really see how things got worse with every chapter. In the beginning, it was just Nikki. But as the story progressed, more and more characters got involved. The threat to Nikki's life extended to her family. The urgency, sense of danger and suspense were there. However, I was waiting for the answers to my questions and I'm sad to say some of them weren't answered. The suspense mounted up in me and I was really waiting, wanting, needing answers that will solve the mystery. But there were hints here and there, as well as big revelations that surprised me.
Halflings is a riveting paranormal romance that will keep readers satiated with its heartbreaking forbidden romance, heart-stopping Halflings and heart-pounding action and suspense. Burch gives readers an intriguing and fresh take on the Nephilim in Halflings. I recommend this to people who enjoyed Hush, Hush, Crescendo and Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick, paranormal romance readers and angel enthusiasts. by PreciousIt's more of a girl's book!
Nikki Youngblood is a human who's mastered Karate, while the paranormal surroundings that meet's her are changing her life and maybe she'll find the love of her life?
I have to admit I was a little disappointed with this book, because I had too high expectations. We've all read the type of drama's where there's this paranormal romance twist, but I expect something extraordinary to make me satisfied. I really liked the character's, but there where a few things that bugged me.
Nikki she can Karate and I understand that the happenings in this book is kinda traumatizing, but that made me a little bit sad. Heather skipped a lot of the action sequences and I understand that It's supposed to be PG-13. I wish she's used more exciting parts. Nikki ended up either fainting or just somehow disappearing when the sequences happened.
Except that, I'm pretty satisfied. I felt that this is not any original work, but It's a great read. The Halflings part is truly magnifying, but I wish she'd introduce it all earlier.
The artwork of the cover is brilliant and the ending was really good, but all in all I can't give it more than 3,5 stars. I would recommend this book to girl's more than boy's. by Sindre Ellingsenunder reviewloved it !!
Chased by hell hounds, nearly run off the road by a suv Nikki's life used to be simply now she seems like every bad thing in the world is trying to kill her. With evil ready to strike at every turn Nikki ends up having three beautiful guys watching over her. They call themselves Halflings the offspring of fallen angels. They plan to keep Nikki out of dangers but sometimes that's not easy to do. New problems arise when Nikki finds herself falling in love with two of her protectors. This comes a big shock as she has never been interested in guys, but now she can't help but want two but more trouble is ahead than just love because Nikki needs to work out what's going on before she is killed.
I would just like to say when people I know read books and tell me there is a MASSIVE! Love triangle in the book I normally choose to stay clear but this book was very different. The love triangle in this book was deep and emotional. Raven and Mace are two very different characters at first look I thought of mace as light and caring one and Raven as dark and sexy but there is a whole lot more to these two characters and the book was so much more than just love drama. It's about family and making the right chooses and the evil that's inside us all it's our choice to be good or bad and this book really did show that.
Nikki was a really good character. She is a fighter, deep down, and she faces what's coming head on. As one of the main characters she was feisty and kind and enjoyable to read about. I also felt that there is a lot more we are going to learn about her as the series goes on. I just had a sense that there is a lot of hidden power or potential inside Nikki that's begging to come out. The story was packed with danger, and Nikki went from a normal life to being on the supernatural hit list. There were a lot of intense moments in the book between characters and sometimes humour the book seemed to find a great mix of everything.
Now I would like to confess that as an avid reader you sometimes fall for the characters you're reading about and raven was one of those characters for me. While at first look you feel his just an arrogant pretty boy, but I felt there more to him, and I feel that over readers will spot that underneath his front, you will see someone different.
A wonderful written story Jam packed with forbidden love, danger and a burning evil that will suck you in.

It's not often I come across an angel book that I really enjoy, but HALFLINGS by Heather Burch has made the cut to being one of my favorites! I enjoyed the story-line greatly because there was always something going on. Plenty of action and SO much drama! There is also a love triangle and although those can be tiresome and played-out, Heather did well in putting in her own twist that got me pining for both guys. It will have you pulling your hair out, spazzing on whom to team up with. Raven and Mace are definitely swoon worthy and can give any girl a hard time in making a choice. As for their brother Vine, he is just the cutest thing to mellow the two out and balance all the madness. I was glued to the pages! The characters are extremely well thought of and can easily get you attached; Oh my gosh! I tear jerked so much on more than one occasion.
The only set back that bothered me is that at some points it would bounce from one story to the next, which gave pause and I had to recall what was going on to get back on track. I also wanted the story to go further into detail who Vessler is and get a grasp as to know if he's really a dangerous person, or a pond to someone who is more maniacal. Also, the significance of Dr. Richmond was a little flat. The role of Seer for Nikki was a bit lacking and unclear. She barely used her powers in the story and it doesn't explain how she acquired it, or how it makes her a huge importance for the enemy to want her so badly. I just wished there was a little more back play added. The ending killed me. I really didn't like it. It left you empty and upset because it was in a way cheezy and anti-climatic. Although I hate cliffhangers at times, I was really hoping for one here. One that would have me standing on the edge craving for more. With all my negatives the positives still outweigh the dislikes.
I am looking forward to meeting back up with Nikki, Mace, Raven, and Vine in Guardian (Halflings #2). Halflings by Heather Burch is a great addition to the Angel genre! I enjoyed this 2012 Debut and I think you will too! by SpadesHighHalflings by Heather Burch was a literary feast!
Finally, FINALLY, we have an angel book that delivers!
Halflings by Heather Burch was a literary feast!
But get this. It took me a week to read the first 40 or so pages. There was something rushed and flat about the beginning that a lot of people are having a problem looking past. But I promise you, get past that and this book takes on a whole different personality. I was persistent and I refused to give up on this book, and I'm so glad that I did because it was like after that 41st page this book shed its skin and became something magnificent. I read the rest in almost one sitting. I think what finally broke me was the second Raven POV. I could clearly see the time and care taken to create his personality and I knew the author had it in her, and then BAM! I fell in love so quickly I can't remember what I disliked about this book.
It was truly one of the best angel books I have ever read. Heather combined love, mystery, danger, religion, faith, fantasy and magic exquisitely well. I don't have one bad thing to say about it other than the beginning. The plot was ferocious and strong, leading the reader through hell hound attacks, burning buildings and a heartbreaking love triangle with two of the steamiest love interests I've met in a while. The writing became something otherworldly the longer I read, flowing smoothly throughout the story without a single interruption.
Nikki is our female lead, and she was just wonderful. She held her own around Mace and Raven, and showed different sides around each. She was strong-willed, dedicated, and sometimes she had me cracking up. Her transformation throughout the book was highly entertaining and I can't wait to see more from her.
Mace was our first male lead. He was strong but soft, sweet but fierce, and I'm so in love with him I wish this book came to life just so I could see him! Raven is our second male lead. He was dark, brooding, angry and completely and utterly sexy! Nikki may think she knows who she wants, but there was something sad and endearing about Raven that I couldn't ignore. But there was also something openly wonderful about Mace that I couldn't dismiss. This love triangle was subtle and patient, which means it's going to explode in the next book!
The time taken to create these certain race of angels amazed me. There's this scene where Mace takes Nikki outside to explain things and I literally left my world while he told her everything. I've never seen magic sit side by side with religion and faith and have neither side retreat or lose! Both sides held their own, creating an absolutely amazing reading experience.
Halflings by Heather Burch will be able to hold its own when it comes to angels and the Young-Adult genre. Readers will fall in love with Mace's good boy charm and Raven's bad boy heart, and have an even harder time deciding which forbidden Halfling Nikki should choose! I can't wait for a sequel. I would absolutely recommend this! by Reading For Fununder reviewGreat debut novel, love these Halflings!

When you start to read this book you are totally throw into the action. Nikki, the main character is literally pursued by Hell Hounds. So first: there's a lot of action in this book and sometimes, even take over the romance, but I was still totally turn on and I read almost the half of the story the first night.
Nikki is a great female character; she's got a strong mind and believes in supernatural stuff so this is helping a lot! She did some karate and she's also an artist (great mix!).
I liked the way the author introduced the Halflings: She keeps the reader into the mystery about them. The 3 main Halflings: Raven, Mace and Vine, are good YA characters, but I was a bit disappointed about them.
Raven is a disturbed/broken one, so I fell easily for him. Mace seems to be a handsome boy next door, the knight with his white armor! And Vine, still young to spiced up things, but we all know that someday, he'll broke some hearts! I really enjoy the dilemma Nikki's have to go thru, that's involved teenagers real problems (like her best friend, but I won't tell you more).
Just one thing I would like to mention: Where were Nikki's parents???? Ok I know they are artist but... My mom always wanted to know where I was all the time!!!
The author's still is ok, nothing extravagant or difficult to read, but I would have love to read about the ''historical'' past or legends or myth of these Halflings. The author really put the emphasis on what happening 'now' instead of mix the past and present.
Halflings was a great YA story for a debut novel: I really enjoy my reading, the plot and the characters, the pace was good, it never get boring, there is always something happening. I really begin to enjoy YA story about angels (like Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick or The Fallen series by Kate Lauren). I'm the kind of girl who's interested in a good love triangle and this is included in this story, so it's a plus for me. I truly recommend this book to YA Fantasy lovers; this is a great little story that will bring you some sunshine in your cloudy day! by valerie- Top review
Halflings
Thank you Netgalley and Zondervan publishers for allowing me to review this book.
I haven't read any angel books before this one, and I can't say I'm disappointed, this was a great book. It was fast paced, I could not put it down. I read it within one day.
Nikki Youngblood is having a seriously bad day, she is chased by strange dog like creatures, and then nearly run over by a SUV, until three incredibly gorgeous guys, Halflings, half fallen angels, half humans, are sent to protect her from the forces of evil.
Nikki is a tough character, she comes off somewhat of a tomboy to me, she likes motorcycles, and has a black belt in karate, she don't care much for fashion, or boys, unlike her boy crazed best friend, Krissy.
The ending was one of those cliffhangers, I'm looking forward to the second book. by Sarah
