Greek mythology meets Vampire Academy
Half-Blood reminded me so much of the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead right from the beginning. There are a lot of similarities but with Greek mythology thrown in. The main characters Alex, Aiden and Caleb reminded me of Rose, Dimitri and Eddie. Now with that being said, this author did not disappoint. Half-Blood became it's own unique story that I couldn't help but fall in love with. The Covenant series is going to be up there in my top favorite series.
I loved Alex, she is so funny and a complete kick butt chick. I enjoyed her snide remarks and take no prisoners attitude. She is such a strong character but still has a soft spot for her family and friends. Aiden, WOW and I mean WOW total HOTTIE! He is quiet, mysterious and swoon worthy. He has volunteered to help Alex train over the summer to get her caught up to her class after she's been away from the covenant for three years. Then there's Seth, he is mysterious, powerful and a bit of a stalker. I still don't know how I feel about him.
I don't want to give any spoilers away. Half Blood has so much going for it. I loved the friendship between Alex and Caleb. Even after being apart for three years it was like they never had been. They went right back to being best friends, breaking the rules and trying not to get caught. Alex and Aiden's relationship was so hot and fun. While their romance is forbidden, the chemistry between them can't be denied. There is also a lot of action and suspense for those who enjoy that. I just didn't want to see past Aiden. Lol I'll say it again, I loved the storyline, the characters and this series will certainly be a favorite for me. I am highly recommending this, it's a must read!

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.
Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:
Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.
Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck. (summary from book)
I was very pleased with this book, it is well written and very exciting with many quirky funny, parts. I love Alexandria (Alex for short), she is a very strong young girl. Aiden is swoon worthy, and after reading chapter one and two from his point of view on the author's website, I like him even more.
I read the Prequel Daimon first, and was glad I did, as it just made this story flow well, and I already knew why she was where she was in the beginning. (she had already been on the run from the Daimons that killed her mom, we never read that whole scene, it's not in this book, only in the prequel)
Alex is a half-blood (half descend of the Gods) and the Pures are Hematoi (Her mother was a pure) father a mortal human. Basically before the original demigods had died along with Hercules and Perseus, they'd all shacked up with each other in the way only the Greeks could. Those unions had produced the pure-bloods, the Hematoi, a very, very powerful race. They could wield control over the four elements: air, water, fire and earth, and manipulate that raw power into spells and compulsions.
Half-blood's are gifted with the same strength and speed of the pures, but had an extra special gift that set them apart. They can see through the elemental magic the daimons used. The pures couldn't. There are lots of half's and they are used to protect the pures from daimons, since they can see them for what they are (they look all gross, and no eyes, thick ugly veins show, ugly, then the magic will kick in, then they look like a pure again)
Aiden, the one who comes to Alex's rescue is a pure, a Sentinel. (daimon hunter) and he ends up training Alex to help her catch up so she can join the Covenant again to train to also be a Sentinel. She wants it more than anything, and she even was able to kill 2 daimon's while fighting them off before Aiden showed up, well, one she killed after he got there. He was very impressed that she was able to do this, as she has been out of training for 3 years. He sees something special in her. And boy, is there something extra special in her all right. But I will leave that little mystery for you to find out on your own.
I love the connection Alex and Aiden have, even though it's forbidden for a half and pure to be together, or anything of the sort, they have trouble fighting their attraction. But Aiden is a good guy, and thinks of what it will do to her future if he allows them to become close. He is a real gentleman, much to Alex's dismay!
Here is a nice little quote, kindle location 3345 (note, this same scene, well whole chapter is at authors website from Aiden's POV, chapter 16)
'He moved, ever so slightly, and his lips brushed across mine once, and then twice. It was such a soft, beautiful kiss, but when the kiss deepened, it wasn't a shy one. This was one of dangerously pent-up need, a desire that'd been denied far too long. The kiss felt fierce, demanding, and soul burning.'
We also meet Seth in this book, his interactions with Alex are quite funny at times, I won't say who he is, or what he is there for, so not to spoil anything. But its big, and cool. Not really a love triangle or anything, it's far more complicated than that. That will be all I say of that.
I found this story very refreshing, and the idea quite new, Jennifer is an amazing writer, up there with some of my favorites now. I look forward to reading the rest in this series, and will also go read her other Lux series too.
I highly recommend this book, it's not a copy cat, or anything of the sort. I read tons of books, and will tell you now, this is a very well written series, and you would be missing out if you passed on it.
I have a link at my blog to get the Daimon prequel free, go get that, get yourself a taste of the story, with no expense, you will see, it's a story worth reading. by Michelle's Paranormal Vault of Books
Mythology in a different and amazing level!
First we have Alexandria (with whom I share my real name! Well, almost, hahaha) that is already kicking-ass in the first page. With her mother already dead by the daimons she keeps fighting with only one hope: to go back to the Covenant alive.
But she finds herself surrounded and when hope had left her body a voice, one she quickly remembers, tells her to duck. And she does it like a pro.
Her savior, Aiden, will soon become her personal trainer in a race against time that is going to decide if she becomes a Sentinel -and fight daimons in order to protect the pure bloods and her race- or become a servant (more likely slave) to a pure's house. Which, for a girl like her so strong and free, would be worst than hell.
But there's a secret about her and a prophecy (involving her mother's death) that might change her life completely. Or kill her in the process, the probabilities are very similar.
To complicate things even more Alex is attracted to Aiden but he is a pure blood and a relationship between them is strictly forbidden...
And then Seth appears in the picture... a very mysterious guy that will surely make the decision to choose between him and Aiden very difficult.
Everything related to Greek gods is immediately added to my TBR. Of course Half-Blood was no exception. Before beginning the book I had read a lot of amazing things regarding this book and, to be honest, I was a little bit scared that my expectations were too high.
Thank goodness Jennifer did an AMAZING job.
Characters like Aiden, a swoon worthy hero, will make you melt from the very beginning. Not only because he is sexy, strong and a total fighter but because he believes in Alex and her potential to become one of the best Sentinels.
Did I mention he is hot? Those grey eyes and perfect abs deserve another mention.
And Alex... oh, what an amazing heroine. She has the potential, yes, but she also has a very human side that let us connect with her very easily. Despite all the struggles like her mother's death, the prophecy that made them leave the Covenant in the first place and the constant threat of her becoming a servant Alex fights to overcome them all as best as she cans.
But as much as I liked them all my heart goes to Alex's best friend, Caleb. He is another half-blood training to become a Sentinel that is not only funny, caring and intelligent but also loyal. And I appreciate loyalty above all. He won't hesitate to put his life on the line for Alex, and the guy is not even in love with her which gives him a lot of points.
As for the plot I won't say it's very original but what I can say is that it won't disappoint you at all, I'm sure you will find yourself turning page after page and by the end of the book I hope you have Pure already in your TBR pile 'cause you are going to need it very badly!
I would recommend Half-Blood to people who like strong female characters, lots of fights and a story not too centered in romance. The dialogues are clever, the plot intriguing and well developed and the characters are believable which only improves the chances of you loving the series so don't hesitate and read it too :] by Alaiel Kreuzunder review
I adored this book! It had everything--action, romance, humor. It's a great read! by Katherine Kaynakunder review
Half-Blood. Well, I should say.. wow. The story is pretty amazing. Greek mythology, gods and super powers and stuff like that. Yeah, totally. ;)
Alex is a pretty badass girl, who is a half-blood and who fights daimons. After the death of her Mum, she needs to go back to the Covenant, to train to become a Sentinel. Well, she is in lots of troubles. Haha figured! Our heroine has a very specific attitude - breaking rules and all of that, yeah!
Let stick to the point - her trainer - Aiden. Oh my gosh!! by Nea Barabea
Firstly, let me address the cover: I am an absolute purple addict, so this cover struck a chord with me. Not only for the colour though. Also, for the sheer beauty in it's simplicity. It has to be one of my favourite covers of 2011.
Now the book itself:
When I discovered this book through other blogger/reviewer friends on Twitter, I had to look it up and see what all the fuss was about. I will admit, I try not to read too many reviews before buying a book. I usually tend to catch one or two higher rated and one lower rated, just to have a comparison; to see what people loved versus what others disliked.
The general consensus of this book was that it has comparisons to Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series. For some, the comparison was too much and was what they disliked the most. For others, it didn't bother them so much and they could rate the book purely on it's own merits.
Now, I can honestly say that Vampire Academy is a series that's close to my heart. I will always be in love with Dimitri Belikov, my gorgeous Dimka. He was probably my first fictional true love. I adored that series for many reasons, that I am not here to discuss.
Upon picking up Daimon, the prequel to Half-Blood, I couldn't really make the comparison between it and VA. Yet upon picking up Half-Blood itself, I could see similarities. I won't go into exactly what these are. But I will say this: whilst I see where the similarities lie and how they may have bothered some other readers, for me personally it did not impair my enjoyment of Half-Blood based upon it's own merits.
For me, an avid VA lover, I did not have the problems that seemingly plagued other die-hard fans. Whether this is because I know how to compartmentalise and base my opinion of a book solely on it's own merits and others do not, isn't really for me to say.
So, comparisons or no, I picked up thihs book and fell head over heels in love. From the first word I was absolutely hooked. I was glued to the book every spare minute I had.
I love the fluid way in which Jennifer Armentrout writes. I sometimes find that some authors can be stilted in their writing and jump from place to place without much explanation. But Jennifer's writing is beautiful. It really flows into each part well. You never get left feeling like you don't understand where the story is going.
That is not to say that you see the end coming. Far from it actually. There are twists and turns aplenty.
I can honestly sit here now and say, I do not know what to tell you about the story itself. I feel like I could chatter away forever, but that would mean I give the whole plot away. I know I would never be forgiven for that. By you, or by myself. In my reviews, I always endeavour to tell as little of the plot line as possible, yet get across why I personally loved the book. Well in the case of Half-Blood, that could not be a more difficult feat. I want you as the reader to experience the journey that lies within the covers yourself. Then maybe come back to me and we can talk until our hearts are content. But as for right now, I will keep spoilers to a bare minimum and hopefully leave you feeling like you need to read it for yourself so you know why I had this experience from this book.
Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.
Alexandria is a 17 year old Half-Blood who lives with her mother Rachelle, a Pure. For the last 3 years, they have been cut off from the Covenant. Rachelle took Alex out into the mortal world, never giving her an explanation why.
Now Alex is back at the Covenant and is 3 years behind in her training. Upon her return, she is faced with a dilemma. As a Half, she faces a life of training to become a Guard or indentured servitude. I know which of these I would prefer and so does she.
Alex manages to convince the Dean of the Covenant that she can catch up on all she has missed. Aiden, a Pure, says that he will help train her and get her up to standard. It isn't like a Pure to offer to help a Half in such a way and Alex is shocked at the kindness of his gesture. But Alex doesn't want to train to become a Guard. That is not enough for her. She must become a Sentinel.
So Alex and Aiden begin to train. She must be caught up by the time school starts so that she can attend classes and graduate. It's harder for Alex than maybe she realised. Her body takes a beating and becomes one big bruise.
When Aiden offers to help apply a salve that will help her healing, Alex is shocked at the feelings that stir within her when he applies the salve to the bruises on her back. His fingers gently brush her skin and Alex gets a feeling that if I had been her I would describe it as 'my heart rate speeding up and butterflies in my tummy flying every which way and looking for escape'.
Alex is so shocked at this. Relationships between Halfs and Pures are utterly forbidden. But she's safe there. Aiden doesn't know how she feels and he doesn't feel the same. Does he?
There is one quote within this book, or at least one in particular, that made me melt.
"Alex?" I turned around, figuring he'd changed his mind and was going to order me to see Marcus in the morning and fess up to my bad behaviour. "Yeah ?" He brushed a lock of dark hair off his forehead and flashed that lopsided smile. "I remember you" I scrunched up my face. "What?" The grin increased to a full smile. And... oh, man. He had dimples. The air in my lungs died. "I remember you, too"
I can honestly say, by the end of this book, I was head over heels in love with Aiden. Also, I had a girl crush on Alex. She's feisty, sassy and kick-ass. She isn't the type to sit around moping and feeling sorry for herself. Rather she is the kind that takes the bull by the horns and runs with it. She's my kind of girl and I heart her - big time!
I reached the final word and like a drug addict, I was jonesing for my next fix. I cannot believe I have to wait until April 2012. I need it in my hands now! But I guess I need to be a good and patient little girl. Because good things comes to those who wait. Right? Right! by Keren Kiesslinger
Entertaining to the Core!!!
Wow. Everything about Half-Blood tickled and entertained the reader in me. I dreaded turning the last page and found myself not wanting the story to end.... somehow hoping more pages would magically appear. Hey, I deserve to have a delusional moment or two from time to time.
Storyline, foundation, characters, the whole nine yards held up to my expectations. Reading the synopsis some months ago I was riveted and knew I was going to read Half-Blood. Luckily, I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. Well, I'm in love with Aiden St. Delphi and I have a feeling Seth is going to be a close runner up.... How is that for honesty? Yes, I can be a bit fickle when it comes to my book crushes but I know I'm not the only one.
Alex, short for Alexandria "Defender of Man," is a character I immensely love. She's so much fun to read. Aiden is the guy I know will win hearts in a millisecond. He has a background that has me grasping for more and a calm-quiet exterior that made me want to see what will get him going. Seth is quite the character as well. He's more then meets the eye and the promise of more to come has me squirming in my computer chair. Caleb is the world bestest friend and quite the man himself. Not a love interest mind you but Alex has enough on her plate. Alex and Caleb and their bff relationship is sweet to the core and they mesh so well together. I enjoy the female-male attitudes playing off one another. It helps to deepen the plot.
The only thing that strikes me and I must say this because I know it'll be on the minds of every avid reader. Half-Blood is reminiscent of the Vampire Academy series. In fact, after I read the synopsis months ago I immediately thought of Rose. However, as I read on I came to the conclusion that Half-Blood holds its own in every shape and form. The characters are alive and well in my mind and they can be no one else and no one else can be them.
All in all, Where is book two, Pure? I want to read it now, lol. *^_^* Very entertaining to the very core of me.Entertaining to the Core!!! by Chasity
Blood Pounding Action and Steamy Hot Romance
Imagine being extricated from life as you know it, then witnessing your only surviving kin die before your eyes, being chased by blood-sucking fiends, being pulled back to your previous life but are going to be forced into a lifetime of servitude, then falling for the one guy that when people finds out, will sign your death slip, then finding out your kin is actually not dead and has turned into a monster and she is currently out for your blood, and then told you're actually not only who you actually thought you were, you're actually something else too?
Sucks, right? But that's basically the everyday life of our tragic heroine Alexandria "Alex" Andros. Even though her life sucked balls big time, Alex was a tough-assed, witty-tongued, snarky-sassy attitude heroine who dealt with everything head-on. She was definitely a pleasure to read.
I thought that the story was super fast-paced, Alex was always either up to some mischief, or trouble comes stalking and biting her in the ass. So much action and suspense, and the steamy hot romance between her and Aiden! Something's always happening, be it a good hot making out session, fending off daimons for their lives, daimons infiltrating the Covenant, those L.O.L witty banters and arguments between Alex and the world, there's just no time to do anything than to flip those crazy pages.
