Reviews for Gunmetal Magic
Great spin off
Andrea Nash is a beastkin that is to say her mother is a were-hyena a human who changes shape to a hyena and her father is a hyena who changes shape to a human. As a child Andrea was tortured and abused because of this so it was no surprise that Andrea has kept her beastkin side hidden from everybody. In the KD series Andrea's secret is eventually outed and she is dismissed from her job as a Knight of the Order. Raphael is the male alpha of Clan Bouda, a pack of were-hyenas, he is the typical dark, gorgeous bad boy. Andrea and Raphael were an item for a while, however they broke up when Andrea helped out her human friends rather than the Clan and Gunmetal magic picks up their story as a spin off from Kate Daniels.
I really like the Kate Daniels series and for that reason I read this book. This book can be read if you haven't read KD but I would urge you to read KD if you can first to get the most from this book. I wasn't too keen on Andrea in the Kate Daniels books so I wasn't holding out much hope for her in this one but I do have a huge hot spot for Raphael, I am such a sucker for dark haired sexy bad boys. Anyway it came as a huge surprise when I totally liked Andrea. She has had such a terrible childhood and we learn all about the racial abuses she endured as a youngster. But it is this mistreatment that she has received that has made Andrea the kickass that she is today. Raphael has come across as quite the jack the lad in the KD series but we see a different side to him here. We find out how grown up he is and how seriously he takes his role as male alpha in Clan Bouda.
Gunmetal magic has a different voice to that of Kate Daniels and I really liked it. Dare I say that I liked it more than KD? We get to see Kate Daniels and her mate the beast lord Curran from a different perspective too which was interesting. I really did enjoy this book, the plot was good the romantic teasing, tension and banter between Andrea and Raphael was awesome and it was a 5 star read for me until the plot gets solved in the last third of the book. I found the tone and pace of the book changes and it is this reason that I am going to give Gunmetal Magic 4 stars. It is a great read and I hope we have more Andrea and Raphael books. I would recommend this book to Kate Daniels and Urban Fantasy fans. by Claire Smith
