Excellent Study of God's Wisdom
God's Wisdom In Proverbs, by Dan Phillips, is a new study of the Book of Proverbs. It's not a verse-by-verse commentary, rather an examination of the theme of wisdom applied in all areas of life in the context of the Book of Proverbs paradigm, which is living in the fear of YHWH GOD.
Phillips very ably and engagingly guides the reader through an expositional, theological study of God's wisdom in marriage, relationships, child-raising, and other issues. He deals with the Solomonic authorship of the book, taking a straighforward approach to the text, which clearly states who authored Proverbs. Here we see Dan Phillips' well known apporach to Scripture, which is taking the Word as fully God-breathed, clear, and final in it's authority. This is his approach to the study of Proverbs, and it yields for the student much blessing.
Dan deals with translation issues interacting with the Hebrew text, the structure of Proverbs, and other issues, showing why these things are important and how to read the Proverbs.
Overall, this is a lucid, rich, in-depth study of God's Wisdom. It isn't treated as obscure, high-minded "fluff", but rather concrete, applicable, real life knowledge to be soundly learned and used. I especially appreciated the part about husbands and fathers, where Dan shows that the same qualities that make a wise man also make a wise husband. Chapter 8, Skill in Godly Child-training, is practically a mini manual on how to raise and discipline children. He states the text, explains the text and clearly applies the text with some real-life insights. No convoluted child psychology here! It's an example of the refreshing way that Dan Phillips deals with a subject from Scripture.
Anyone will benefit from God's Wisdom in Proverbs (as long as they are not too proud to learn!), and this volume is an indispensible one for any library. Dan's approach is very straightforward, exegetical, logical, and learned. It is both solidly scholarly, yet pedagogically pastoral and wise. I highly recommend this book! by Pierre Saikaley
